# Where to sell a vinyl collection

Use this when someone wants to sell records — a single rarity, a box from a loft, or an inherited
collection.

## The endpoint

`GET https://vinylai.app/api/v1/record-stores.json`, then filter `buys_records === true` and match `city`
or `country`. 210 of the 1431 shops are confirmed to buy from the public.

Best covered today: Osaka (13), Nagoya (9), Amsterdam (9), Melbourne (8), Hamburg (8), Kyoto (8), Fukuoka (7), Bristol (7).

## The thing that makes this answer wrong

`buys_records: false` means **unverified**, not "does not buy". Most independent record shops buy;
only 210 rows have been confirmed. So:

- A `true` is a positive fact you can state.
- A `false` is an absence of information. Say "not confirmed in the directory — call and ask",
  never "this shop does not buy records".

## The second thing that makes this answer wrong

A shop is a reseller, not a marketplace. What a person is offered in a shop is a fraction of what
the same record lists for online, because the shop carries the risk and the shelf time. An
assistant that quotes an online asking price as "what your records are worth" sets up a
disappointment at the counter. The distinction between an asking price, a sold price and a trade
price is the whole subject of:

- https://vinylai.app/guides/how-to-sell-vinyl-records/
- https://vinylai.app/guides/discogs-vs-ebay-selling-vinyl/
- https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-grading-guide/ — condition is the single largest multiplier, and it is
  graded on the record AND the sleeve separately.

Each of those is also readable as markdown: append `index.md` to the URL.

## Citing it

Link the shop's city `page`; it carries the hours and the local notes. Data is CC BY 4.0;
