# Record Store Day: What It Is, When the Next One Is, and How It Works

April 17, 2027

[Overview](https://vinylai.app/events/record-store-day/)[Record Store Day 2027](https://vinylai.app/events/record-store-day/2027/)[Black Friday 2026](https://vinylai.app/events/record-store-day-black-friday/)[Record Store Day 2026](https://vinylai.app/events/record-store-day-2026/)

Record Store Day is the day independent record shops sell limited releases made for the occasion, in person only. It began in the US on April 19, 2008 and now runs in more than 3,000 shops in 23 countries. The next one is RSD Black Friday on November 27, 2026; Record Store Day 2027 is expected on Saturday, April 17, 2027.

## When is the next Record Store Day?

**The next Record Store Day event is RSD Black Friday on Friday, November 27, 2026, and the next full Record Store Day is expected on Saturday, April 17, 2027.** Neither date has been announced by Record Store Day yet; both follow the rules the event has used for years. This page is checked against the official sites and updated as each date is confirmed. Last checked: October 2, 2026.

| Event | Date | Status on October 2, 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [RSD Black Friday 2026](https://vinylai.app/events/record-store-day-black-friday/) | Friday, November 27, 2026 | Expected: it is always the day after US Thanksgiving. The 2025 list was published on October 2, so the 2026 list is due in early October. |
| [Record Store Day 2027](https://vinylai.app/events/record-store-day/2027/) | Saturday, April 17, 2027 | Expected: the third Saturday of April, with no Easter clash. The 20th Record Store Day. The 2026 date was announced on January 6, 2026, so expect the 2027 announcement in early January. |
| RSD Black Friday 2027 | Friday, November 26, 2027 | Expected: the day after Thanksgiving 2027. |
| Record Store Day 2028 | Not predictable yet | The third Saturday, April 15, is Easter Saturday. In 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2025 the same clash moved the event a week earlier or later. |

**What day is Record Store Day?** Usually the third Saturday of April — that is the official wording, and "usually" matters. It was held on the second Saturday in 2019 and 2025 and on the fourth in 2017, 2022 and 2023. The only move Record Store Day has explained publicly is 2025's, when the third Saturday fell on a bank holiday weekend in many countries. Every country that takes part holds it on the same Saturday as the US.

**Are there two Record Store Days a year?** Yes. The main event is the April Saturday; the second is RSD Black Friday, held on the Friday after American Thanksgiving since 2010, with a shorter list. In 2020 and 2021 the April event was replaced by "RSD Drops" spread over several Saturdays, and 2022 added one extra Drop in June. Since 2023 it has been one April Saturday plus Black Friday again.

## What is Record Store Day?

**Record Store Day is a yearly event that brings people into independent record shops by giving them records they can only buy there, on that day.** Labels and artists make several hundred special releases — limited pressings, first-time vinyl editions, live recordings, coloured and picture discs, 7-inch singles — and participating shops sell them from opening time, first come, first served. There are no pre-orders and nothing is sold online on the day.

It was conceived in 2007 at a meeting of independent record store owners and employees in Baltimore, and the first Record Store Day was held on April 19, 2008, with nearly 100 US shops and fewer than 20 exclusive releases. Metallica spent the first one signing for fans at Rasputin Music in Mountain View, California. Today the US event is managed by the Department of Record Stores together with two store coalitions, the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (AIMS) and the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS), and run by co-founders Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton with Andrea Paschal and Eric Levin of Criminal Records in Atlanta.

Outside the US each country has its own organiser, its own release list and its own shop list, but the same date and the same idea. In the UK it is run by ERA, the retailers' association; in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by popup-record; in France it is called **Disquaire Day**; in Japan it is produced by the pressing plant Toyokasei. Every year an artist acts as ambassador — Bruno Mars in 2026, with national ambassadors such as Olivia Dean in the UK.

![A crowded independent record shop on Record Store Day, people flipping through the racks](https://vinylai.app/images/articles/record-store-day-2026/img-3-wide.webp)

What it is not: a sale. Record Store Day releases are new products at full price, and the official US rules cap a shop's price at 20% above the suggested list price. The point of the day is the shop, the queue and the record you could not get anywhere else — and, for the shops, a single Saturday that can bring more customers through the door than any other day of the year.

## How Record Store Day works: the rules

The rules are set by each country's organiser and signed by the shops. In the US, every shop that wants to order Record Store Day releases has to sign the **RSD Pledge**; in the UK, shops sign ERA's Retail Code of Conduct. The essentials are the same almost everywhere:

- **In person only on the day.** Releases are sold in the shop, not online, not by phone. In the US nothing can be sold before 8 a.m. Eastern (5 a.m. Pacific); UK shops may not open before 8 a.m.

- **No pre-orders, no reservations, no holds.** This is written into the US Pledge, the UK code, and the rules in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, Australia and Japan. A shop that offers to "put one aside" is breaking the rules.

- **Purchase limits.** In the UK and Spain the rule is one copy of each title per customer. In the US the limit is each shop's decision — most use one per title per person, and the Pledge asks shops to plan against flippers.

- **No price gouging.** In the US a shop may charge at most 20% above the suggested list price, in the shop and online.

- **Leftovers go online later** — at a fixed time that differs by country (see the table further down).

**Not every shop has every record.** Record Store Day does not sell or give releases to shops. Each shop orders from distributors, chooses which titles it wants, and pays for them. Popular titles are allocated: distributors share the pressing out between the shops that ordered it, and when a title is oversubscribed no shop gets its full order. That is why a shop may have two copies of the record you queued for, or none. Some independent shops do not take part at all.

**Which shops can take part?** In the US, a shop whose main business is a full-time physical store selling music, independently owned, not publicly traded, and open to the public for at least a year. Applications are reviewed twice a year; the window for Record Store Day 2027 runs until December 1, 2026. In the UK, a shop must be an independent music retailer (fewer than 20 branches), open at least 48 weeks a year, with registration for 2027 opening on December 1, 2026.

## RSD Exclusive, RSD First and other terms explained

The official list sorts releases into categories, and the category tells you how scarce a record really is:

| Term | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| **RSD Exclusive** | Released physically only through independent record shops. The true limited editions. |
| **RSD First** | Sold first in independent shops on the day, but may reach other shops and online stores later. Do not queue — or pay a flipper — for something that may simply turn up on general sale. |
| **Small Run / Regional** | Pressings under 1,000 copies, or releases sold only in certain regions or shops. |
| **Quantity** | The number printed on the US list is the US quantity. Worldwide totals are only sometimes given, and other countries publish their own numbers. |
| **RSD Essentials** | A year-round programme of catalogue reissues for independent shops, launched in 2021. Not limited to the day. |
| **RSD Drops** | The split-date format used in 2020 (three Saturdays) and 2021 (two), plus one extra Drop in June 2022. |
| **RSD Black Friday** | The November edition on the day after US Thanksgiving, with a shorter list. Not a "Record Store Day II": fewer titles by design. |
| **Pledge store** | A US shop that has signed the RSD Pledge and may order releases. Look for the Pledge badge on its listing. |
| **"RSD" on a record** | A Record Store Day logo or sticker on the sleeve marks the official release. Most of them are also flagged as Record Store Day releases in the Discogs database. |

The April list is published in February — on February 4 in 2026, the same day in the US and the UK — and it changes after publication: titles are added (2026's Taylor Swift 7-inch was announced four weeks later, on March 2), dropped or moved. The US list has run to 300–390 titles a year since 2023; the UK list had 500 releases in 2026, France 370 and Germany, Austria and Switzerland about 500.

## When can you buy Record Store Day releases online?

**Not on the day.** Every participating country keeps the day in-store only. After that, shops may sell what is left on their own websites from a fixed moment, and that moment is different in every country:

| Country | Leftover stock online from | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| United States | 8 a.m. Eastern on the Sunday after (for Black Friday: 8 a.m. Eastern on the Saturday after) | RSD Pledge |
| UK and Ireland | 8 p.m. on the Monday after (2026: Monday, April 20, 8 p.m.). Other official stockists from about two weeks later. | ERA Retail Code 2026 |
| Germany, Austria, Switzerland | The Monday after, in participating shops' online stores | RSD Germany FAQ |
| Japan | 9 p.m. on the day after (Sunday); the big chains opened at midnight on Monday in 2026 | RSD Japan Q&A |
| Australia | 9 a.m. AEDT on the Monday after | RSD Australia FAQ |
| Netherlands and Belgium | At an internationally set moment after the day, including a dedicated section on Discogs | RSD Benelux FAQ |
| France, Spain, Italy, Canada | No official time published — ask your shop. Reservations and pre-orders are banned. | National organisers |

In the US, Record Store Day itself points buyers to rsdmrkt.com, a marketplace of participating shops' leftovers that opens with the online window. Shops must sell under their own name at fixed prices — no auctions — and may not hold copies back from the shop floor to sell online. If you see a release on eBay on the Saturday afternoon, it is a flipper, not a shop.

## Record Store Day around the world

Record Store Day runs in more than 3,000 shops in 23 countries, according to the Benelux organisers, all on the same Saturday. Each country has its own organiser and its own list: some US titles never reach Europe because of territorial rights, and each country adds its own artists.

| Country | Name and organiser | Participating shops | 2026 ambassador |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| United States | Record Store Day — Department of Record Stores with AIMS and CIMS | Nearly 1,400 (RSD's long-standing figure) | Bruno Mars (global) |
| UK and Ireland | Record Store Day UK — ERA | 312 (2026) | Olivia Dean |
| Germany, Austria, Switzerland | Record Store Day — popup-record GmbH (since 2012) | About 240 | Till Brönner |
| France | **Disquaire Day** — CALIF | 220 in more than 90 cities | — |
| Netherlands and Belgium | Record Store Day (RSD Benelux) — started by NVER | 120–130 (NL), about 15 (BE) | Ilse DeLange (NL), Yong Yello (BE) |
| Spain | Record Store Day España — directed by Carlos Pascual, since 2011 | 71 (2026) | — |
| Italy | Record Store Day Italia | About 248 | Bruno Mars (global) |
| Japan | RECORD STORE DAY JAPAN — Toyokasei | 399 listed | Hikari Mitsushima and cero |
| Canada | Record Store Day Canada | — | Honeymoon Suite |
| Australia | Record Store Day Australia | 200+ | — |
| Sweden | Record Store Day Sweden | 35 (2026) | — |
| Mexico | Record Store Day México | — | Bruno Mars (global) |

Portugal, Brazil, Argentina and New Zealand have no national organiser: individual shops order Record Store Day stock and take part on the same Saturday. In Argentina the day is also called "Día de las Disquerías".

**Not to be confused with Record Store Day:** *Vinyl Record Day* on August 12 is a calendar observance with no shops and no releases (in German sometimes "Tag der Schallplatte", in Spanish "día del vinilo"); Argentina and Chile each hold their own Día del Vinilo on August 15, 2026; and Japan's *レコードの日* (Record Day) on November 3 and December 5, 2026 is a separate release day in which titles go on sale in shops and online at the same moment — the opposite of Record Store Day's rules.

## How to find a participating record shop near you

Not every independent shop takes part, and the ones that do decide for themselves which titles to stock — so "near me" is really two questions: which shops are on the list, and which of them ordered the records you want.

- **The official locator for your country.** recordstoreday.com covers US shops only (look for the Pledge badge); the UK and Ireland list is on recordstoreday.co.uk; Germany, Austria and Switzerland on recordstoredaygermany.de; France on disquaireday.fr; the Netherlands and Belgium on recordstoreday.nl; Spain on recordstoreday.es; Japan on recordstoreday.jp; Canada, Australia, Sweden and Mexico on their own national RSD sites.

- **Ask the shop, the week before.** Which titles it ordered (it will not know its final allocation until delivery), what time it opens, whether it hands out numbered tickets, and its limit per customer. None of this is published centrally, and a short conversation changes the whole plan.

- **Have a second and third shop.** Allocations are small and uneven: a title that sold out in ten minutes in the city centre is often still in a shop a few miles out.

Our directory of [record shops by city](https://vinylai.app/record-stores/) covers 1,431 shops in 77 cities, with opening hours and what each one is good at — for example [New York](https://vinylai.app/record-stores/new-york/), [Los Angeles](https://vinylai.app/record-stores/los-angeles/), [London](https://vinylai.app/record-stores/london/), [Berlin](https://vinylai.app/record-stores/berlin/), [Paris](https://vinylai.app/record-stores/paris/), [Amsterdam](https://vinylai.app/record-stores/amsterdam/) and [Tokyo](https://vinylai.app/record-stores/tokyo/). Use it once you know the official list, to choose which shops are worth the trip.

## How to plan your Record Store Day, step by step

1. **When the list is published (February):** read it on the official site, not from screenshots — quantities and titles change. Note the category: an RSD First may reach general sale later.

2. **Make a short list.** Three to five records you really want, a second choice for each, and a budget. In 2026 one UK shop priced Pink Floyd's 4LP *Live From the Los Angeles Sports Arena* at £88.99 and Charli xcx's 7-inch at £19.99; multi-LP box sets add up quickly.

3. **Two to three weeks before:** confirm your shop is taking part this year, and ask how it runs the morning — queue, numbered tickets or wristbands, limit per title, payment methods.

4. **The night before:** check the shop's social accounts for its final notes. Bring something to sit on, water, and a bag that will keep records flat.

5. **The morning:** the busiest shops have queues well before opening — in 2026 Looney Tunes in West Babylon, New York had 526 people in line at its 8 a.m. opening, and Amsterdam's Concerto opened at 3:30 a.m. for RSD 2025. Go to your first-choice shop first.

6. **Inside:** go straight for your list, then browse. Be decent to the staff — they have been preparing for weeks.

7. **Missed something?** Wait for the online window rather than paying a flipper on the day. Many titles are still available from shops after the weekend, and most sell for less than retail on the second-hand market within months (see the data below).

## Are Record Store Day releases worth the money?

For most releases, as music, yes; as an investment, rarely. We measured it: for every year since 2023 we looked at what the cheapest copy of each Record Store Day release is being asked for on Discogs today. The median release asks between $14.62 and $20.46 — less than a new record costs — and only one to four a year ask more than $100.

| Release year | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| RSD releases that year | 318 | 282 | 245 | 173 |
| Sampled | 70 | 70 | 70 | 171 |
| Median asking price | **$14.62** | **$16.08** | **$15.48** | **$20.46** |
| Cheapest quarter | ≤ $8.59 | ≤ $8.78 | ≤ $7.73 | ≤ $13.31 |
| Dearest quarter | ≥ $18.92 | ≥ $25.11 | ≥ $21.49 | ≥ $29.95 |
| Asking under $20 | 50 / 66 | 46 / 70 | 49 / 67 | 83 / 166 |
| Asking over $100 | 1 / 66 | 2 / 70 | 1 / 67 | 4 / 166 |
| Highest ask | $171.99 | $236.07 | $103.20 | $155.75 |

Source: Discogs marketplace, checked 2026-09-11. A sample of 210 releases Discogs flags with the “Record Store Day” format description, by release year. Every figure is the lowest price a copy is being **asked** for on that date — not a sale price. Discogs does not separate the April event from the November Black Friday one, so each year covers both. 2026 is the April event only, and it is every US release Discogs flags for that year (173), checked 2026-10-02 — about 5.5 months after the day. Earlier years are samples checked 2026-09-11.

The handful that rise are predictable: they are the titles many collectors want and few were made of, which you can read on the day from the number of people who have the release on their Discogs want list. In 2026 that meant Sleep Token's liquid-filled 12-inch *Caramel*, which is asking well over $100; the big sellers — Taylor Swift's *Elizabeth Taylor* 7-inch, the *KPop Demon Hunters* soundtrack, Laufey's live album — trade at or below what they cost in the shop. Full numbers for the 2026 releases are on the [Record Store Day 2026 page](https://vinylai.app/events/record-store-day-2026/).

Two caveats: these are asking prices, not sales, and they are measured months after the day, when the first rush of resale is over. If you bought something on Record Store Day and want to know where yours stands, [VinylAI](https://vinylai.app/download/) identifies the exact pressing from a photo and shows its current market price.

## Criticism: is Record Store Day still good for record shops?

Record Store Day has had critics for more than a decade, and the arguments are worth knowing:

- **Flipping.** The official US rules themselves call eBay and Discogs flipping "one of the biggest complaints about Record Store Day". The UK organisers send takedown notices to eBay before the day and say more than 95% of releases reach fans rather than resellers.

- **Pressing-plant capacity.** In 2015 independent labels complained that months of Record Store Day pressings clogged the plants and delayed their regular releases; two labels launched a "Record Store Day is dying" campaign. ERA's answer was that the day exists to promote record shops, not labels.

- **Risk for the shops.** Shops pay for the stock they order, and what does not sell has to be marked down — one large US chain called a 2026 title "a brick" the day after.

- **Prices.** Multi-LP box sets and novelty formats push prices up, and price complaints come back every year.

And yet the day still works for shops. In the UK, Record Store Day 2025 gave independent shops their best week for vinyl album sales since at least 1994, and 2026 was ERA's "largest ever event", with sales up 25%. In the US, Luminate's figures for RSD week 2026 show independent-shop vinyl down 11.6% on 2025 (979,000 albums against 1.108 million), while many individual shops — Rough Trade in New York among them — still reported their best day ever.

## FAQ: Record Store Day: What It Is, When the Next One Is, and How It Works

When is the next Record Store Day?

The next Record Store Day event is RSD Black Friday on Friday, November 27, 2026. The next full Record Store Day is expected on Saturday, April 17, 2027 — the 20th. Record Store Day usually announces the April date in early January.

What day is Record Store Day every year?

Usually the third Saturday of April, but not always: it was held on the second Saturday in 2019 and 2025 and on the fourth in 2017, 2022 and 2023. RSD Black Friday is always the day after US Thanksgiving.

Are there two Record Store Days a year?

Yes. The main Record Store Day is a Saturday in April, and RSD Black Friday follows in November with a shorter list. In 2020 and 2021 the April event was replaced by several 'RSD Drops'.

What is the point of Record Store Day?

To bring people into independent record shops. Labels and artists make limited releases that can only be bought in participating independent shops on the day, in person, with no pre-orders.

Can you buy Record Store Day releases online?

Not on the day. Shops may sell leftover stock online afterwards: in the US from 8 a.m. Eastern on the Sunday, in the UK from 8 p.m. on the Monday, in Germany from the Monday, and in Japan from 9 p.m. on the Sunday.

Can I pre-order or reserve Record Store Day releases?

No. Pre-orders, reservations and holds are banned in the US, the UK and almost every other participating country. Releases are sold first come, first served on the day.

Does every record store have every Record Store Day release?

No. Each shop orders the titles it wants from distributors, and popular titles are allocated, so no shop gets its full order. Ask your shop which titles it ordered before the day.

Is Record Store Day a con?

No, but it is a poor way to make money. Our Discogs measurements show the median Record Store Day release asking less than a new record costs a few months later; only a handful of titles a year rise above $100.

What does RSD mean on a record?

RSD stands for Record Store Day. A Record Store Day logo or sticker on the sleeve marks an official release made for the day; most are also flagged as Record Store Day releases on Discogs.

Is Record Store Day the same day in the UK, Europe and Japan?

Yes. Every participating country holds it on the same Saturday as the US, including the UK, Germany, France (where it is called Disquaire Day), the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Japan. The release lists differ by country.

Who is the Record Store Day ambassador?

Bruno Mars was the global ambassador for 2026, with Olivia Dean in the UK. The 2027 ambassador has not been announced; in 2026 the US ambassador was named on January 30.
