# Abbey Road Vinyl Value Guide: 1969 First Pressings and What Your Copy Is Worth

**The Beatles' *Abbey Road* came out on 26 September 1969 in the UK and on 1 October in the US**, and it has sold more than 30 million copies. Discogs lists 606 vinyl versions of it, and one UK first-pressing variant alone is in the collections of more than 24,000 Discogs users. So an ordinary 1969 copy is a common record, and most copies are worth listening-copy money. You can recognise a UK original in a minute: **Apple PCS 7088**, dark green Apple labels, a fully laminated sleeve, and `YEX 749-2` / `YEX 750-1` in the dead wax. The very first sleeves have the Apple logo on the back printed out of line with the text, and the first labels leave "Her Majesty" off side two. This guide shows how to read those details, which other 1969 editions exist, which reissues are worth buying, and which Abbey Road sales we could actually document.

By VinylAI Editorial Updated October 12, 2026

## Key Takeaways

- The UK first pressing is Apple PCS 7088 (26 September 1969): dark green Apple labels, a fully laminated sleeve, and stamped runouts YEX 749-2 / YEX 750-1.
- The earliest UK sleeves print the back-cover Apple logo out of line with the text, and the first labels omit "Her Majesty"; both are common, not rare.
- The US original is Apple SO-383 on Apple labels, with runouts beginning SO-1-383; there is no UK or US mono Abbey Road.
- The highest Abbey Road sale we could verify is $8,929 for an album flat signed by McCartney, Harrison and Starr (RR Auction, May 2018); an ordinary unsigned 1969 copy is a listening copy.

## What an Abbey Road LP is really worth

Start with supply. *Abbey Road* was a number one album in 1969, it has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide (Wikipedia), and it has never been hard to buy. On Discogs, the main UK 1969 entry (release 2498807) is listed in about 24,000 collections, the "misaligned Apple" first-print entry in about 14,800, and the most common US Apple SO-383 entries in 6,000 to 7,000 each. A buyer who wants a 1969 copy can always find another one.

That gives an honest rule of thumb: **a played 1969 copy, UK or US, is a listening copy**, usually priced closer to a new reissue than to a collectible. That is a rule, not a quote. A UK first pressing in clean condition, with a sound laminated sleeve and the earliest label and cover details, is the collectible tier. It sells well above a worn copy, but it is not rare: tens of thousands survive.

The genuinely expensive Abbey Road items are signed copies, which sell as autographs. In the UK and the US the album was issued in stereo only, so a 1969 "UK mono" copy does not exist (details below).

## The UK first pressing (Apple PCS 7088): how to tell

Every UK copy from 1969 carries the catalogue number **PCS 7088**. It was an **Apple** release, not Parlophone, pressed by EMI's Gramophone Co. Ltd. Check these points:

1. **Labels:** dark green Apple labels, a whole apple on side one and a sliced apple on side two, with "Mfd. in U.K." and the label matrix numbers `YEX.749` and `YEX.750`. The shade of green varies between copies.
2. **Runouts:** machine-stamped `YEX 749-2` on side one and `YEX 750-1` on side two, followed by letter codes such as `RPR 7` or `GTM 5`. The letters vary from copy to copy: they are EMI's "GRAMOPHLTD" production code, in which each letter stands for a digit (G=1, R=2, A=3 and so on). They are not a cutting engineer's initials, and the runouts are not hand-etched.
3. **Sleeve:** a single sleeve (not a gatefold), laminated front and back, with no flaps on the back. The back is printed by Garrod & Lofthouse.
4. **Track list:** "Her Majesty" is not listed on the back cover of any early copy. On the earliest labels it is missing from side two as well.
5. **Front cover:** early covers show the drain in the road at the bottom right of the crossing photo.

Because the same `YEX 749-2` / `YEX 750-1` stampers served the first UK pressings and several later runs, the runout alone does not date a copy. Read it together with the label and the sleeve. Our [guide to identifying first pressings](https://vinylai.app/guides/first-pressing-identification/) explains the method in general.

## The misaligned Apple and "Her Majesty": what they prove

Two details separate the first UK print run from the rest, and both are documented on Discogs:

- **Misaligned Apple logo.** On the earliest sleeves the back-cover photo, Apple logo included, was enlarged slightly from the top left corner while the text stayed the same size. The Apple logo therefore sits out of line with the track list, and "ABBEY ROAD" on the wall almost touches the edge. The front photo is also cropped tighter. It was corrected on later printings, where the logo lines up with the text.
- **"Her Majesty" missing from the label.** The song plays as a hidden track after "The End", but the first side-two labels do not credit it. Later labels add it, credited as "The End / Her Majesty".

The earliest combination is a misaligned-Apple sleeve with no "Her Majesty" on the label (Discogs release 2607424). Other combinations exist: Discogs also lists a misaligned sleeve with "Her Majesty" on the label (6033667) and an aligned sleeve without it (2498807). Sleeves and records were assembled from whatever stock was at hand, so a mixed copy is not a fake.

Keep the scale in mind. The misaligned-Apple entry is in about 14,800 Discogs collections. It is the first print, and buyers pay more for it in good condition, but it is not a scarce variant. The cover must be original to the record: a misaligned sleeve with a 1970s record inside is a married copy.

## The US first pressing (Apple SO-383) and Canada

In the US the album was issued on **Apple SO-383**, manufactured by Capitol at its own plants and carrying **Apple labels**. The labels read "Mfd. by Apple Records, Inc." and the label matrices are `SO1-383` and `SO2-383`.

- **Runouts** are etched and begin `SO-1-383` and `SO-2-383`, followed by lacquer and plant marks. Discogs separates the plants by those marks; Scranton copies, for example, carry a stamped triangle with "IAM" inside.
- **Early covers** show the square metal street lid at the bottom right of the crossing, bleeding off the edge; later covers crop or erase it. The back has the Apple logo aligned with the text.
- **"Her Majesty"** is missing from the back cover and from the side-two label on the first US copies. Some 1969 runs add it to the label.

Later US pressings are easy to tell apart: a 1974 repress on Apple has the cropped cover, and from 1976 the album appears on Capitol labels with the same SO-383 number. Barcodes arrive much later still.

**Canada** used the same catalogue number, SO-383, on Apple labels. The first Canadian pressing came from RCA's plant in Smiths Falls, Ontario; its back slick is pasted over the cover and the front reads "Printed in Canada".

## Other 1969 pressings around the world

EMI companies pressed *Abbey Road* locally in dozens of countries in 1969 and 1970. These are the first catalogue numbers you are most likely to meet:

| Country | Catalogue number | What to note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Germany | 1 C 062-04 243 | Laminated sleeve. The first run has "O' Darling" on the label, later corrected; "Her Majesty" not listed. |
| France | 2 C 062-04243 | Pressed by Pathé Marconi; the label calls the last track "Ending - Her Majesty". |
| Italy | 3C 062-04243 / PMCQ 31520 | Both numbers appear on early copies. |
| Netherlands | 5C 062.04243 | Several 1969–70 variants. |
| Australia | PCSO 7088 | Misaligned Apple on the back; an early sleeve misprint (the "blood stain") was corrected. |
| New Zealand | PCSM 7088 | Local Apple pressing. |
| South Africa | PCSJ 7088 | Issued on Parlophone. |
| Japan | AP-8815 | Toshiba pressing with obi, black inner sleeve and English lyric insert; "Her Majesty" not on the label. |
| Brazil | BTL 1008 (mono) / SBTL-1008 (stereo) | Thin cover in a clear outer sleeve. |

**Was there a mono Abbey Road?** Not in the UK or the US: there is no mono PCS 7088 and no mono SO-383, and Wikipedia describes *Abbey Road* as the first Beatles album not issued in mono anywhere. Discogs does list mono-designated local LPs from Brazil (BTL 1008) and Argentina (34-6010). Any listing for a "UK mono" copy is wrong.

The Japanese **EAS-80560** is a 1976 reissue in the "country flag" obi series; the 1969 Japanese first issue is AP-8815.

The reissues worth knowing:

- **Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-023 (1980)**, the label's first Beatles release: half-speed mastered by Stan Ricker and pressed by JVC in Japan, with "Original Master Recording" across the top of the cover. See our [half-speed mastering guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/half-speed-mastering-vinyl/).
- **The 2012 remaster LP** (PCS 7088 with barcode 0094638246817), 180 g, from the 2009 digital remaster. It is the common modern copy; "Her Majesty" is still unlisted.
- **The 2019 50th-anniversary edition**: a new mix by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, cut at half speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios (his name is in the runout) and pressed by Optimal Media in Germany. It came as a single LP (0602577915123; B0030719-01 in the US), a 3LP Anniversary Edition with two LPs of session takes (0602508007446), and a picture disc (0602508048883).

## Documented Abbey Road sales

These are the sales we could verify from the auction house's own record:

| Item | Result | Where and when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| *Abbey Road* album flat (cover only, no record) signed by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr | $8,929 incl. buyer's premium | RR Auction, lot 7054, John Brennan Music Collection, ended 17 May 2018 |

Signed copies are autograph lots: their value comes from who signed and how the signatures are authenticated, not from the pressing. A copy signed by all four Beatles would be a different class of item again.

We found no auction or press record of an unsigned copy selling above $5,000; the highest documented sale is the signed album flat above (RR Auction, lot 7054, May 2018). An ordinary unsigned 1969 copy is priced on condition, as the next section explains.

## What actually moves the price

Because the album is so common, condition and completeness decide the price far more than the country or the plant:

- **The record:** a quiet, unscratched disc is what buyers pay for. Grade it by eye and by ear using the [Goldmine grading standard](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-grading-guide/).
- **The sleeve:** the laminated UK sleeve shows ring wear, lifting laminate and split seams clearly. A clean sleeve with the misaligned Apple is the copy collectors want.
- **Originality:** record and sleeve should match. A first-print sleeve with a later record, or the reverse, is worth less than a consistent copy.
- **Inner sleeve:** UK copies came in generic inner sleeves (Discogs notes black and white generic inners, and some die-cut black ones). A period inner helps; it does not make a copy.
- **Sealed copies:** a sealed 1969 copy is rare and has to be checked for a resealed later pressing. Read our [guide to sealed records](https://vinylai.app/guides/sealed-vinyl-records-value/) before you buy or sell one.

## Quick checks: label, runout and catalogue number

Five checks settle most questions about which *Abbey Road* you have:

- **Label:** UK 1969 copies are on Apple, with dark green Apple labels. Parlophone appears only on a few overseas issues, such as South Africa's PCSJ 7088.
- **UK runouts:** stamped `YEX 749-2` on side one and `YEX 750-1` on side two.
- **US label and runouts:** the first US pressing is Apple SO-383 on Apple labels, with runouts beginning `SO-1-383`. Capitol labels with the same number arrive only in 1976.
- **Mono:** *Abbey Road* was never issued in mono in the UK or the US.
- **Germany and Japan:** the German first issue is Apple 1 C 062-04 243 in a laminated sleeve; the Japanese first issue is AP-8815 from 1969, and EAS-80560 is the 1976 reissue.

If a copy matches none of these, check its catalogue number against the table above before trusting a seller's description.

## Which Abbey Road to buy, and how to sell one

| If you want… | Buy | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The 1969 sound, cheaply | A clean UK PCS 7088 or US SO-383 from 1969 | Plenty exist. Pick on the condition of the record and the sleeve. |
| The collectible first print | UK PCS 7088 with the misaligned Apple and no "Her Majesty" on the label | The earliest combination. Pay for condition, and check that record and sleeve belong together. |
| A new copy as a gift | The 2019 50th-anniversary LP | In print, half-speed cut, new Giles Martin mix. |
| A period audiophile edition | Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-023 (1980) | Stan Ricker's half-speed master of the original mix. |

**Selling:** for an ordinary copy, a marketplace where buyers search by pressing details works best. List the catalogue number, both runouts, the label details ("Her Majesty" present or not), the back-cover Apple (aligned or misaligned), and separate grades for record and sleeve. A signed copy with provenance is an autograph lot and belongs with a specialist auction house. Our guide on [how to sell vinyl records](https://vinylai.app/guides/how-to-sell-vinyl-records/) covers the steps.

The Beatles' other albums follow the same logic, with their own first-pressing tells: see our guides to [Sgt. Pepper](https://vinylai.app/guides/sgt-peppers-vinyl-value-guide/), [Revolver](https://vinylai.app/guides/revolver-vinyl-value-guide/) and [the White Album](https://vinylai.app/guides/beatles-white-album-value-guide/), and the overview in our [Beatles records value guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/beatles-records-value-guide/). If you would rather not read runouts by hand, photograph the label in the VinylAI app: it identifies the pressing and adds it to your collection.

## FAQ: Abbey Road vinyl value

How can I tell if my Abbey Road vinyl is a first pressing?

A UK first pressing is Apple PCS 7088 with dark green Apple labels, a fully laminated single sleeve and the runouts YEX 749-2 and YEX 750-1. The earliest copies have the Apple logo on the back cover printed out of line with the track list, and no "Her Majesty" credit on the side-two label. A US first pressing is Apple SO-383 on Apple labels, runouts starting SO-1-383, with "Her Majesty" missing from the cover and label.

How much is an original 1969 Abbey Road vinyl worth?

Most 1969 copies are worth listening-copy money, because the album sold more than 30 million copies and tens of thousands of first-pressing copies survive. A UK first pressing in clean condition, with the misaligned-Apple sleeve and no "Her Majesty" on the label, is the collectible version and sells well above a worn copy. Condition of the record and the laminated sleeve matters more than anything else.

Is the misaligned Apple Abbey Road rare?

It is the first print of the UK sleeve, but it is not rare: the Discogs entry for the misaligned-Apple copy without "Her Majesty" on the label is in about 14,800 collections. Collectors still prefer it to the corrected sleeve, so a clean copy with the matching early record is the most sought-after ordinary Abbey Road. Make sure the record inside is a 1969 pressing too.

Was Abbey Road released in mono?

Not in the UK or the US. There is no mono PCS 7088 and no mono SO-383, and Wikipedia describes Abbey Road as the first Beatles album not issued in mono anywhere. Discogs does list mono-designated local pressings from Brazil (BTL 1008) and Argentina (34-6010). A listing for a "UK mono" Abbey Road is a mistake, whatever the price.

What's the most valuable Abbey Road record ever sold?

The highest result we could verify from an auction house record is $8,929 for an Abbey Road album flat signed by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, at RR Auction in May 2018 (lot 7054). Signed copies sell as autographs, valued on who signed and how the signatures are authenticated. An ordinary unsigned 1969 copy is a listening copy, priced on the condition of the record and the sleeve.

Which Abbey Road vinyl reissue sounds best?

It depends on what you want to hear. The 1980 Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-023 is a half-speed master of the original mix by Stan Ricker. The 2019 50th-anniversary LP has Giles Martin and Sam Okell's new mix, cut at half speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. A clean 1969 UK or US copy gives you the original mix as it was first sold.

Is the Japanese Abbey Road pressing worth more?

The 1969 Japanese first issue is Apple AP-8815, pressed by Toshiba, with an obi, a black inner sleeve and an English lyric insert. Complete copies with the obi are sought after by collectors of Japanese pressings. The better-known EAS-80560 is a 1976 reissue from the "country flag" obi series, not a first issue, so check the catalogue number on the spine and label before paying a first-issue premium.
