# Hotel California Vinyl at 50: First Pressing, Value and Which Edition to Buy

**Hotel California turns 50 on 8 December 2026.** If you own a 1976 copy, it is almost certainly one of millions: the album has sold more than 42 million units worldwide, and a played original usually sells for less than a new reissue costs. You can tell a US first pressing in under a minute: the catalogue number is **Asylum 7E-1084** (not 6E-103), the dead wax carries `STERLING` and `LH` with the etched message `IS IT SIX O'CLOCK YET?`, and the sleeve opens out as a gatefold with a poster inside. To listen, the in-print Rhino 180g pressing is the sensible buy; the MoFi One-Step is the premium option.

By VinylAI Editorial Updated October 12, 2026

## Key Takeaways

- The US first pressing is Asylum 7E-1084 (December 1976). In 1977 Asylum renumbered the album 6E-103, so a 6E-103 label is a later copy.
- First-year US copies were cut by Lee Hulko at Sterling Sound: look for STERLING and LH plus the etched messages "IS IT SIX O'CLOCK YET?" (side A) and "V.O.L. IS FIVE PIECE LIVE" (side B).
- With over 42 million units sold and more than 41,000 Discogs users owning the Specialty-pressed original alone, an ordinary 1976 copy is a common record; condition and the poster decide what it fetches.
- To listen: the in-print Rhino 180g pressing (RRM1-1084, $24.98 at the official Eagles store on 12 October 2026). The MoFi UltraDisc One-Step (17,500 numbered copies, $125 list) is the premium edition.

## Hotel California turns 50

Asylum released *Hotel California* on 8 December 1976. It became the Eagles' defining record: Wikipedia counts more than 42 million units sold worldwide, and the RIAA certified it 28 times Platinum in the United States on 22 January 2026. That number is the first thing to understand about its value. A record pressed in those quantities is everywhere, in attics, charity shops and dealers' bins.

The anniversary changes the search, not the supply. Demand for **Hotel California vinyl** peaks every December, when the album's birthday falls in the middle of the gift season, and in 2026 there is a round-number anniversary on top. As of 12 October 2026 no 50th-anniversary vinyl reissue had been announced. The only anniversary release we found is a book, Sean Egan's *Eagles and Hotel California: 50 Years*. If a deluxe edition is announced, we will add it to the table below.

This guide answers three questions in order: is mine a first pressing, what is it worth, and which edition should I buy if I just want to play it? The identification part takes about a minute with a torch and the record in your hand. It works for the US original, the UK, German, Japanese and Canadian first issues, and the main reissues.

## First pressing (Asylum 7E-1084): how to tell

Every US copy pressed in the first year carries the catalogue number **7E-1084** on the spine, the back cover and the labels. Check these five things.

1. **The catalogue number is 7E-1084, not 6E-103.** In 1977 Asylum renumbered the album 6E-103. On some Specialty-pressed copies you can see the change in the dead wax itself: `7E 1084` is scratched out and `6E-103` etched next to it. A 6E-103 label means 1977 or later.
2. **A plant code after the label matrix.** The label reads `7E-1084-A` followed by a code for the factory that pressed it: `SP` for Specialty Records, `CSM` for Columbia's Santa Maria plant, `PRC` for PRC in Richmond, Indiana, and `PRCW` for PRC's Compton plant. No plant is "the" first pressing; all of them pressed the album at the same time.
3. **The Sterling cut in the dead wax.** First-year US copies were mastered at Sterling Sound in New York, and the lacquers were cut by Lee Hulko. Look for `STERLING` (stamped) and `LH` (etched).
4. **The two etched messages.** Side A reads `IS IT SIX O'CLOCK YET?`, side B `V.O.L. IS FIVE PIECE LIVE`. A full side A runout on a Specialty copy looks like `7E 1084 A RE SP -3 "IS IT SIX O'CLOCK YET? STERLING LH`.
5. **The package.** A gatefold sleeve with the hotel lobby photo and the lyric inside, a custom inner sleeve with credits, and on initial copies a three-panel fold-out poster of the band in black-and-white sepia. The spine carries the price code `0698`.

Two lookalikes catch people out. **Record club copies** made by RCA Music Service have `R 130030` stamped in the runout instead of the Sterling cut (see our [guide to record club editions](https://vinylai.app/guides/record-club-editions-explained/)). **Promotional copies** are the same pressing with "NOT FOR SALE" printed on the labels. For the method behind all of this, our [first pressing identification guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/first-pressing-identification/) explains how to read any runout.

## The 1976 first issues outside the US

Hotel California came out around the world in December 1976, and each country had its own first issue. If your copy was bought in Europe, Japan or Canada, the US checklist does not apply. Use these instead.

- **UK: Asylum K 53051.** The sleeve also prints 7E 1084. It is a gatefold with the lyric inside, an inner sleeve and an 11" x 33" black-and-white poster of the band, and the sleeve was printed by Gothic Print Finishers in London. Runouts look like `K·53051·A1`.
- **Germany: AS 53 051.** Cut locally at Tonstudio Pfanz, so the runout reads `WEA 7E-1084-A2` followed by `PF`. It has the same gatefold, 11" x 33" poster and printed inner sleeve.
- **France: 53 051.** One documented French pressing used US Santa Maria metalwork on side B, so `STERLING LH` and `CSM` turn up on a French record.
- **Japan: P-10221Y.** Pressed by Warner-Pioneer, with an obi, a four-page fold-out insert with notes and lyrics in Japanese and English, and the poster. The list price was ¥2,500.
- **Canada: 7ES-1084.** Pressed by Quality Records, with a `Q` in the runout and a black-and-white fold-out poster.

Discogs also lists 1976 national editions for the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Italy (W 53051) and Australia. In every country the same rule applies: a complete copy, with its poster and inner sleeve, is worth more than a bare disc in a sleeve. The [original vs reissue guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/original-pressing-vs-reissue/) covers why packaging matters as much as the vinyl.

## Every notable edition in one table

Discogs lists 275 vinyl versions of *Hotel California*. Most are national variants and represses of the same thing. The table below picks the ones a reader actually needs to tell apart: the first issues by country, the US plant variants, the club and promo copies, the 1977 renumbering and the reissues that matter. The runout column shows what is etched or stamped in the dead wax on side A.

How to read it: the four 1976 US rows are the same first pressing from different factories, and the `SP`, `CSM` and `PRC` copies share the Sterling cut. The **6E-103** row is the 1977 renumbering. The **R 130030** row is the record club copy. The reissues fall into two families. **Audiophile editions**: MFSL 1-126 (1984) and the MoFi UltraDisc One-Step UD1S 2-028 (2023). **Standard 180g represses**: Kevin Gray's R1 1084 (2009), and Rhino's RRM1-1084, mastered by Bernie Grundman and in print since 2014, including the 2021 Walmart edition with a replica tour laminate.

For prices on any of these, our market card for the album lists what copies are offered for: [Eagles – Hotel California on VinylAI Market](https://vinylai.app/market/eagles-hotel-california-747504/).

## What your copy is worth

Here is the honest answer for most people reading this: **a played 1976 copy of Hotel California is worth roughly what a new reissue costs, often less.** That is a rule of thumb, not a quote. The reason is supply. More than 41,000 Discogs users list the Specialty-pressed US original in their collections, more than 18,000 list the Santa Maria pressing, and roughly 12,000 to 13,000 each list the German and UK first issues. That is before you count the millions of copies that never got catalogued. The official Eagles store sells a new 180g pressing for $24.98 (checked 12 October 2026), and a worn original competes with that.

What moves a copy above the crowd:

- **Condition of the vinyl.** Most copies were played hard. A clean, quiet copy is the exception, and it is what buyers pay for. Grade it honestly with our [vinyl grading guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-grading-guide/) before you price it.
- **The poster and inner sleeve.** A first-issue copy without its poster is incomplete, and buyers notice.
- **Sealed and factory-fresh.** See the next section.
- **Things that are not a normal copy.** Test pressings and signed copies are a different market. A test pressing signed by all five members sold for **$1,681** at RR Auction in August 2018. Test pressings, promos and acetates are explained in our [guide to promos and test pressings](https://vinylai.app/guides/promo-white-label-and-test-pressings/).

What does *not* add value: the plant code on its own. An SP copy is not worth more than a CSM copy because one factory is "rarer". The cut is the same and they were pressed side by side.

## The MoFi One-Step and other audiophile editions

Mobile Fidelity has issued *Hotel California* twice. The first was **MFSL 1-126** in 1984, an Original Master Recording LP cut by Jack Hunt. The second, released in October 2023, is the **UltraDisc One-Step UD1S 2-028**: two 180g SuperVinyl discs at 45 rpm in a box, limited to **17,500 numbered copies**, mastered and cut by Krieg Wunderlich and pressed at RTI. MoFi's list price is **$125**, and a 2024 repress exists. According to the Discogs notes, the chain runs from the 1/4" 15 ips Dolby A analogue master to DSD 256, then through an analogue console to the lathe. "One-Step" refers to the plating: records are pressed from the first metal part made from the lacquer, skipping the intermediate generations of normal pressing, which wears the parts out fast and is why the runs are limited.

**Why it costs more than the original:** because it starts at $125 new and its run is capped, while a 1976 copy is one of millions. A 1970s original is worth more than a modern reissue only when it is rare. For Hotel California it is not, so the price order is reversed: the newest audiophile edition is the dearest one.

Other editions in this family:

- **DCC LPZ-2043** (1992), a 180g audiophile pressing from the 1990s audiophile boom.
- **R1 1084** (2009), 180g, cut by Kevin Gray at AcousTech and pressed at RTI.
- **RRM1-1084** (Rhino, from 2014), 180g, mastered by Bernie Grundman, with a replica of the original poster. This is the pressing the official store sells today.

For what "audiophile" actually buys you, see [audiophile vinyl pressings explained](https://vinylai.app/guides/audiophile-vinyl-pressings-explained/). A historical footnote: Wikipedia notes the album was considered for a quadraphonic release in early 1977, but the idea was dropped. Discogs lists no Quad vinyl, so any "quad Hotel California" you are offered needs a very close look.

## Sealed copies: worth more?

A genuinely factory-sealed early copy is worth more than an opened one. The question is whether it is genuinely sealed, and whether it is genuinely early.

Sealed copies do reach the top auction houses: Heritage Auctions sold a sealed *Hotel California* LP in October 2025. That lot was catalogue **6E-103**, the 1977 renumbering, which shows how to check a sealed copy without opening it. Read the catalogue number on the spine and back cover through the shrink. 7E-1084 is the 1976 issue. 6E-103 is later. Club editions carry their own markings.

Before paying a sealed premium:

- **Check the seal itself.** Reshrinking is easy and common. Our [guide to spotting resealed vinyl](https://vinylai.app/guides/resealed-vinyl-how-to-tell/) lists the tells: seam type, a shrink that is too tight or too clear, the absence of a price sticker where one belongs.
- **Check the catalogue number through the shrink**, as above.
- **Accept that you cannot grade the record.** A sealed copy is bought blind. Warps and pressing defects stay hidden until someone breaks the seal, which is why serious buyers pay for provenance.

Our [sealed vinyl value guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/sealed-vinyl-records-value/) explains when sealed matters and when it is just shrink-wrap. For Hotel California, a sealed 1976 7E-1084 is a collector piece. A sealed later copy is mainly a nice-looking gift.

## Best edition to listen to

Buying to collect and buying to listen are different decisions, and for this album they lead to different records.

| If you want… | Buy | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The original sound, cheaply | A clean 1976 US copy with `STERLING` / `LH` in the runout | The original Lee Hulko cut, from any of the SP, CSM or PRC plants. Plentiful, so you can be picky about condition. |
| A new copy as a gift | Rhino RRM1-1084, 180g | In print, $24.98 at the official store on 12 Oct 2026, mastered by Bernie Grundman, with the poster replica. |
| The best a modern system can do | MoFi UltraDisc One-Step UD1S 2-028 | 45 rpm on two discs, 17,500 numbered copies, $125 list. Check the box number and condition when buying second-hand. |
| A collector piece | A complete 7E-1084 first-year copy with the poster, or a verified sealed one | Completeness and condition drive the price, not the plant code. |

Whichever you choose, grade a second-hand copy before you pay. Most of the value in an old pressing is lost to surface noise. If you are buying in the run-up to the anniversary, remember that December is also when sellers ask the most. Hotel California pairs naturally with that other 1976–77 blockbuster, so if you are building a decade shelf, our [Rumours vinyl value guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/rumours-vinyl-value-guide/) uses the same method for Fleetwood Mac.

## Check your copy in a minute

Here is the whole identification in one pass, with the record in front of you:

1. Spine and labels: **7E-1084** (1976) or **6E-103** (1977 on)? K 53051, AS 53 051, P-10221Y or 7ES-1084 if your copy is not American.
2. Label: which plant code follows `7E-1084-A`, `SP`, `CSM`, `PRC` or `PRCW`?
3. Dead wax: `STERLING`, `LH` and `IS IT SIX O'CLOCK YET?` on side A? `R 130030` means a record club copy.
4. Package: gatefold, credits inner sleeve, poster?
5. Condition: play the quiet intro of side A and the end of side B, where wear shows first.

If you would rather not squint at the dead wax, the VinylAI app reads the label and catalogue number from a photo, matches the exact pressing and keeps it in your collection with its details. Then check current offers for the album on [our market card](https://vinylai.app/market/eagles-hotel-california-747504/).

## FAQ: hotel california vinyl

How much is Eagles Hotel California vinyl worth?

For most copies, not much more than a new reissue, and often less. The album has sold over 42 million units, and more than 41,000 Discogs users own the Specialty-pressed 1976 original alone. A clean, complete first-year copy with the poster sells above the crowd. A genuinely sealed 1976 copy, a test pressing or a signed copy is a separate market. A signed test pressing made $1,681 at RR Auction in 2018.

How much is the original Hotel California album worth?

The original is the 1976 US Asylum 7E-1084 (or K 53051 in the UK). Its value depends almost entirely on condition and completeness, because it was pressed in huge numbers. A played copy without its poster is a common record. An excellent copy with the gatefold, credits inner sleeve and fold-out poster is what collectors pay a premium for. Check the dead wax for STERLING and LH to confirm it is a first-year US cut.

Is there a vinyl record of Hotel California available?

Yes. The official Eagles store sells a 180g pressing for $24.98 (checked 12 October 2026). Its barcode, 081227961619, matches Rhino's RRM1-1084 edition, mastered by Bernie Grundman and in print since 2014. For a premium version there is the MoFi UltraDisc One-Step (45 rpm, 2LP, 17,500 numbered copies, $125 list). No 50th-anniversary vinyl had been announced as of 12 October 2026.

How do I know if my Hotel California is a first pressing?

A US first pressing says 7E-1084 on the spine and labels. Later copies say 6E-103, the 1977 renumbering. Look in the dead wax for STERLING and LH (Lee Hulko at Sterling Sound) and the etched message "IS IT SIX O'CLOCK YET?" on side A. The label shows a plant code after 7E-1084-A: SP, CSM, PRC or PRCW. These are all first-year factories, not different rarities.

Is the MoFi One-Step Hotel California worth it?

It is worth it if you want the best-sounding edition on a good system and accept the price: $125 list for two 45 rpm discs, limited to 17,500 numbered copies, mastered by Krieg Wunderlich and pressed at RTI. Its signal chain runs from the analogue master through DSD 256 to the lathe. If you want the original sound for less, a clean 1976 Sterling-cut copy does it. If you want something to gift, the in-print Rhino 180g does too.

Does a Hotel California record club edition have value?

Record club copies made by RCA Music Service are identified by R 130030 stamped in the runout instead of the Sterling cut. They are complete, playable records, but collectors pay less for them than for retail first pressings, because they are not the Sterling-cut original that the first-pressing premium is about. Price one as a listening copy, judged on condition.
