# Nevermind Vinyl Value Guide: How to Spot a 1991 First Pressing and What Your Copy Is Worth

**Nirvana's Nevermind came out on 24 September 1991 and has sold more than 30 million copies**, but almost all of them were CDs and cassettes. That is why the 1991 US vinyl LP is the one Nevermind record collectors actively look for: on Discogs more users want it than own it. You can recognise a US original in a minute: catalogue number **DGC-24425**, a single (not gatefold) sleeve, a printed paper inner sleeve with the rubber-monkey photo, and `MASTERDISK DGC-24425-A-GL1` in the side A dead wax. Most other copies you will meet are European 1991 pressings or one of the many reissues since 2009, and those are listening copies. This guide shows how to tell them apart and lists the sales we could actually verify.

By VinylAI Editorial Updated October 12, 2026

## Key Takeaways

- The US original is DGC-24425 (24 September 1991): single sleeve, printed rubber-monkey inner sleeve, side A runout MASTERDISK DGC-24425-A-GL1, mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk.
- European 1991 copies are GEF 24425, pressed in Germany (Sonopress), Holland, Spain and France. The German first issue has an upside-down printed inner sleeve.
- The 1991 US LP is the Nevermind record collectors want most: about 14,100 Discogs users want it and about 11,000 own it. Reissues since 2009 are listening copies.
- The highest documented sale is £18,600 for an LP signed by all three members (Wessex Auction Rooms, 16 April 2025). Reissues from 2009 onward are listening copies.

## What a Nevermind LP is worth: the honest answer

Start with the edition, because it decides almost everything. Discogs lists 226 vinyl versions of *Nevermind* (master 13814, checked 12 October 2026). They fall into three groups:

- **The 1991 US original, DGC-24425.** The scarce one. About 11,000 Discogs users list it in their collection and about 14,100 have it on their wantlist. Among the 1991 pressings that more than 2,000 Discogs users own, it is the only one with more wants than haves.

- **European and other 1991–1992 pressings** (GEF 24425 and local catalogue numbers). Genuine first-year copies, but they were pressed in bigger numbers for a vinyl-buying market, and collectors pay less for them than for the US original.

- **Reissues from 2009 onward**, including the standard 180-gram DGC-24425 and 424 425-1 copies still in shops. One European repress alone is listed by more than 77,000 Discogs users. These are listening copies, worth roughly what a new copy costs.

Inside each group, condition and completeness set the price: a quiet record, an unsplit sleeve and the original printed inner sleeve. We do not quote a price per grade here, because a ladder like that would be a model, not a measurement. Instead, the documented sales section lists real results with their dates. Grade your copy with our [vinyl grading guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-grading-guide/) before you compare it with any sale.

## The 1991 US original (DGC-24425): how to tell

The US first pressing was released by DGC (The David Geffen Company) "by special arrangement with Sub Pop Records", which is why both labels appear in the credits. Check these points:

1. **Catalogue number:** `DGC-24425` on the labels and the inner sleeve. Barcode `7 2064-24425-1 7` is printed on the back. An original does have a barcode, so a barcode alone proves nothing either way.

2. **Back cover address:** the bottom of the back reads "DGC 9130 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90069-6197. Manufactured and Distributed in the United States by Uni Distribution Corp." with "Made in U.S.A."

3. **Sleeve:** a single pocket sleeve, not a gatefold. Gatefolds came later: the 1996 Mobile Fidelity edition, the 2011 deluxe set and the 2021 30th-anniversary LP.

4. **Inner sleeve:** black-and-white printed paper. One side has a band photo and production credits; the other has selected lyrics and Kurt Cobain's photo of a rubber monkey.

5. **Dead wax:** side A `MASTERDISK DGC-24425-A-GL1`, side B `DGC-24425-B-GL1` (some copies add `1-2` on side B). The album was mastered by **Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk**, New York, on 2 August 1991.

6. **Plant:** Discogs credits the retail US pressing to the MCA pressing plant in Gloversville, New York.

The vinyl does not contain the hidden track "Endless, Nameless". It was left off the initial pressings of the album and added later on CD only, so its absence is normal on every 1991 LP. Our [guide to runout and matrix numbers](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-runout-matrix-numbers-decoded/) explains how to read the dead wax if the etching is faint.

## Promo copies and the record club pressing

Two US variants carry the same catalogue number and are easy to confuse with the retail original.

**Gold-stamp promos.** Discogs notes that some US copies came with a gold promo stamp on the back cover. The record inside is the same Masterdisk pressing. Sellers describe stamped copies as harder to find than standard ones, and one sold for $1,500 in 2025 (see the sales table below). Make sure the stamp is a period gold stamp and not a later addition, and ask for photos of the runout.

**Columbia House club edition.** Mail-order club copies were pressed by Specialty Records Corporation, not at Gloversville. You can tell them by three things:

- the labels read `CRC DGC 24425`, and "CRC" appears on the back cover above the barcode;

- the runouts read `DGC 24425A-1A SS` with the SRC logo instead of the Masterdisk etching;

- they came in a plain white inner sleeve without a spindle hole, not the printed one.

A club copy is a complete 1991 record, but it is not the retail first pressing and collectors pay less for it. Our [record club editions guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/record-club-editions-explained/) covers how to spot any club pressing. For white labels and test pressings in general, see [promo, white label and test pressings](https://vinylai.app/guides/promo-white-label-and-test-pressings/).

## European and other 1991 pressings

Outside the US, *Nevermind* was issued on vinyl under catalogue number **GEF 24425** (the labels print it as `GEF 24 425`, with `DGC-24 425` as a second number). The 1991 European copies were made in Germany, Holland, Spain and France.

- **Germany, Sonopress.** The most common 1991 European copy. It has an embossed bass-clef logo on the side B label and stamped runouts such as `108 DMF-5752 A-1` or `201 DM F-5752 A-3 C`. The **first issue has a misprinted inner sleeve**: the text and the monkey photo on the back are upside-down. Later represses have it printed the right way up. The sleeve says "Printed in Germany". Copies exist with DGC labels and with Geffen Records labels.

- **Holland, Sony/CBS Haarlem.** DGC labels, "Made in Holland", and the code `08-031492-20` on the labels and sleeve.

- **Spain and France.** The spine and back cover carry `GEF 24425 (5C)`, with Spanish credits; the French issue used the sleeve printed in Madrid. Spanish copies were pressed by Iberofon or by Eurogram (runout `850 GEF 24425`). The French issue has blue labels, "Made in France" with the SACEM logo, and runouts etched `LP GEF 24425 A JC TR`: a lacquer cut by Jean-Christophe Beaudon at Translab in Paris.

- **Latin America.** Argentina (`TLP-24425`, track titles in Spanish, with "Star Away" misspelt on the back), Brazil (`170.8040`, "Nervermind" misspelt on the side B label), Mexico (`DGC2-4425`), Venezuela, Bolivia and others. These local pressings have their own collectors and often more wants than haves on Discogs.

The first Japanese vinyl issue came in 1996: MCA Victor's limited `MVJG-25001`.

The reissues worth knowing:

- **Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-258 (1996).** Half-speed mastered by Ken Lee from the original tapes, 200-gram vinyl, gatefold, limited to 5,000 numbered copies. The most collectible reissue. Discogs also lists an unofficial copy with the same number, so check the gold-ink number on the back and the etched `MFSL 1-258 A-1 KL/2` runout.

- **MCA Victor MVJG-25001 (Japan, 1996).** Limited, with a replica inner sleeve and a Japanese lyric insert.

- **Simply Vinyl SVLP 0038 (UK, 1997).** 180-gram reissue. Several later "SVLP 038" copies listed on Discogs are unofficial, so check the details against the release page.

- **Original Recordings Group ORG 032 / B0012766-01 (2009).** Cut by Bernie Grundman, pressed at RTI on 180 grams, in black and a limited blue vinyl version.

- **20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, B0015884-01 (2011).** Four 180-gram LPs, mastered by Bob Ludwig with lacquers by Chris Bellman, pressed by Pallas.

- **Standard 180-gram reissues (2013 onward).** US `DGC-24425` cut by Bernie Grundman and pressed by Pallas, and the European `424 425-1`. These reuse the original catalogue number on the US copy, so check the runout: `BG` and `P. USA` in the dead wax mean a reissue.

- **30th Anniversary Edition, 3846123 (2021).** Newly remastered from the analog tapes, 180 grams, in a tip-on gatefold with a 7-inch of "Endless, Nameless", "Even In His Youth" and "Aneurysm". An 8-LP super deluxe box was issued at the same time.

Watch out for unofficial pressings. Discogs flags the Russian `ДRT 1004` (1992), the 1998 picture discs and many European `424 425-1` copies from 2001–2011 as "Unofficial Release". Our [original pressing vs reissue guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/original-pressing-vs-reissue/) explains the general rules.

## Documented Nevermind sales

These are the high-value sales we could verify, each with its source:

| Item | Result | Where and when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| *Nevermind* LP, sleeve signed by Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl after the band's 1991 show at the Bierkeller, Bristol | £18,600 (estimate £10,000) | Wessex Auction Rooms, Wiltshire, UK, Vinyl Records & Music Memorabilia sale, 16 April 2025 (reported by Kovels, Just Collecting and Digi24) |
| US 1991 DGC-24425 with gold promo stamp, record NM, sleeve EX, runout `MASTERDISK DGC-24425-A-GLI` | $1,500 (best offer accepted) | eBay, ended 20 June 2025 (archived on Popsike) |

The signed copy shows where the real money is: in the signatures and their provenance, not in the pressing. The promo result is a single sale of an exceptional copy, not a typical value for an ordinary first pressing.

We found no auction or press record of an unsigned copy selling above $5,000; the highest documented sale is £18,600 for the signed copy above (Wessex Auction Rooms, 16 April 2025).

## Five checks that tell you which Nevermind you have

Five details settle which *Nevermind* you are holding. Check them in this order:

- **The side A runout.** `MASTERDISK DGC-24425-A-GL1` is the 1991 US original, from Howie Weinberg's Masterdisk master. A stamped `DM F-5752` code is a German Sonopress pressing, `08 31492` a Dutch one, and `BG` with `P. USA` a modern Pallas reissue.

- **Where it was made.** The US original says "Made in U.S.A." and names Uni Distribution Corp. on the back. The 1991 GEF 24425 copies say where they were made: Germany, Holland, Spain or France.

- **The barcode.** The 1991 US and European copies we checked carry `7 2064-24425-1 7`, and the current reissue carries the same code, so the barcode does not date a copy. The runout does.

- **The sleeve.** Every 1991 copy has a single pocket sleeve. A gatefold means a later edition: Mobile Fidelity 1996, the 2011 deluxe set or the 2021 30th-anniversary LP.

- **The inner sleeve.** A printed paper inner with the rubber-monkey photo belongs to the retail 1991 pressings; on the German first issue its back is printed upside-down. A plain white inner without a spindle hole points to the Columbia House club copy.

If a seller's description does not match these details, ask for photos of the labels, the back cover and both runouts before you pay.

## Condition, completeness and what lowers value

Because most collectors want a clean US original or a sharp European first press, small faults matter:

- **The inner sleeve.** The printed paper inner sleeve is part of a complete copy on the US and European pressings. A copy without it is incomplete. On the German first issue, the upside-down print is what proves the early press, so keep it.

- **Sleeve wear.** The dark blue cover shows ring wear and scuffs clearly. Seam splits and writing lower the grade quickly.

- **Surface noise.** The album has quiet passages, for example the opening of "Something in the Way", and these show up surface noise. Play-test or describe it honestly.

- **Stickers and stamps.** A genuine gold promo stamp on a US copy is a plus. Shop price stickers on the front are a minus for most buyers.

Grade the record and the sleeve separately, following the Goldmine standard in our [grading guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-grading-guide/), and photograph both runouts. A sealed copy needs a different approach, covered in our guide to [sealed vinyl records](https://vinylai.app/guides/sealed-vinyl-records-value/): a reissue in shrink wrap is still a reissue.

## Which Nevermind edition to buy

| If you want… | Buy | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The original as an object | A 1991 US DGC-24425 with `MASTERDISK … GL1` and the printed inner sleeve | The pressing collectors want most, from Howie Weinberg's 1991 master. |
| A first-year copy for less | A 1991 German Sonopress GEF 24425 with the upside-down inner sleeve | Same 1991 master source, easier to find. |
| The audiophile collectible | MFSL 1-258 (1996), numbered | 5,000 copies, half-speed mastered, 200 grams. Check against the unofficial copies. |
| A new copy to play | The current 180-gram DGC-24425 / 424 425-1, or the 2021 30th Anniversary LP + 7-inch | In print, inexpensive, and the 2021 edition adds "Endless, Nameless" on the 7-inch. |

As of 12 October 2026 we found no announcement of a 35th-anniversary vinyl edition. The 30th-anniversary edition from 2021 is still the most recent reissue with new mastering.

## Check your copy and sell it well

Three photos tell you which *Nevermind* you have: the side A label, the bottom of the back cover, and the side A dead wax. Compare the runout with the table above. `MASTERDISK DGC-24425-A-GL1` means a US original. `SS` with the SRC logo means a club copy. `BG` plus `P. USA` means a modern reissue. A `DM F-5752` stamp means a German Sonopress pressing. If you would rather not squint at the dead wax, photograph the label and VinylAI identifies the pressing and adds it to your collection.

To sell an ordinary first pressing, use a marketplace where buyers search by pressing. List the catalogue number, the runout, the plant and the grades of record and sleeve, and mention the inner sleeve. A signed copy with provenance belongs at a specialist auction house, as the Wessex result shows. Our guide on [how to sell vinyl records](https://vinylai.app/guides/how-to-sell-vinyl-records/) covers fees, photos and shipping.

## FAQ: Nevermind vinyl value

How can I tell if my Nevermind vinyl is a first pressing?

A US 1991 original has catalogue number DGC-24425 on the labels, a single (not gatefold) sleeve with the DGC Sunset Blvd. address and "Uni Distribution Corp." on the back, and a printed paper inner sleeve with the rubber-monkey photo. In the dead wax, side A reads MASTERDISK DGC-24425-A-GL1. European 1991 copies are GEF 24425; the German first issue has its inner sleeve printed upside-down on one side.

How much is an original 1991 Nevermind vinyl worth?

It depends on which 1991 pressing it is and its condition. The US DGC-24425 original is the one collectors want most: on Discogs more users want it than own it. European GEF 24425 copies fetch less, and reissues are listening copies. The highest documented result for an unsigned copy we found was $1,500 for a US gold-stamp promo in near-mint condition (eBay, June 2025).

What is the most valuable Nevermind vinyl?

The most valuable copies are signed ones with provenance. A Nevermind LP signed by Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl after their 1991 Bristol show sold for £18,600 at Wessex Auction Rooms on 16 April 2025, against a £10,000 estimate. Among unsigned records, the 1991 US original and the 1996 Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-258, limited to 5,000 numbered copies, are the most sought after.

Why does Sub Pop appear on a DGC record?

Nevermind was released by DGC, The David Geffen Company, on 24 September 1991, "by special arrangement with Sub Pop Records", Nirvana's previous label. That is why Sub Pop is credited on the US original and on the European GEF 24425 pressings. It does not mark a special edition: every retail copy carries the credit, so check the catalogue number and the runout to date your copy.

Is the Mobile Fidelity Nevermind worth buying?

The 1996 Mobile Fidelity edition, MFSL 1-258, was half-speed mastered by Ken Lee from the original tapes and pressed on 200-gram vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. It was limited to 5,000 copies, numbered in gold ink on the back. It is the most collectible reissue. Discogs also lists an unofficial copy with the same number, so check the numbering and the etched KL/2 runout before you buy.

Do Nevermind vinyl records include "Endless, Nameless"?

No original vinyl does. "Endless, Nameless" was accidentally left off the initial pressings of the album and was later added to CD pressings as a hidden track after about ten minutes of silence. The 1991 LPs end with "Something in the Way". The 2021 30th Anniversary single-LP edition (3846123) adds the song on a bonus 7-inch, together with "Even In His Youth" and "Aneurysm".

How do I tell a new Nevermind reissue from the 1991 original?

The current US reissue reuses the catalogue number DGC-24425, so check the dead wax rather than the label. A reissue has BG (Bernie Grundman) and P. USA (Pallas) in the runout and is pressed on 180-gram vinyl; the original reads MASTERDISK DGC-24425-A-GL1. European reissues carry 424 425-1. The 2021 edition is a gatefold with a 7-inch, which no 1991 copy has.
