# The Wall Vinyl Value Guide: First Pressings and What Your Copy Is Really Worth

**Pink Floyd's *The Wall* came out on 30 November 1979** and became one of the biggest-selling double albums ever made: the RIAA certified it 23× platinum, and Wikipedia puts worldwide sales above 30 million. Discogs lists 282 vinyl versions. So the honest answer to "what is my copy worth" is that an ordinary played 1979 copy is a common record and is usually worth listening-copy money. You can recognise a UK original in a minute: **Harvest SHDW 411**, no barcode on the back, a cream (not white) brick wall, and an inside panel that names no band members, only "Words and Music – Roger Waters" and "Produced by David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, Roger Waters". The copies that have fetched real money at auction are signed ones, and this guide lists every sale we could verify.

By VinylAI Editorial Updated October 12, 2026

## Key Takeaways

- The UK original is Harvest SHDW 411 (30 November 1979). First-issue sleeves have no barcode and no band-member credits inside; the discs are numbered SHSP 4111 and SHSP 4112.
- The lacquers were cut by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab in Los Angeles, so UK, US, German and French 1979 copies carry TML-X, TML-M or TML-S stamps in the dead wax.
- The US original is Columbia PC2 36183, with discs C 36184 and C 36185 and runouts beginning PAL-36184. First-issue gatefolds list "Produced By" at the top of the right inside panel.
- The highest documented sales are signed copies: $16,643 (RR Auction lot 6032, May 2019) and $16,478 (lot 567, June 2019). An ordinary played copy is a listening copy.

## What a The Wall LP is worth: the honest answer

*The Wall* was number one on the US Billboard 200 for 15 weeks and has been reissued many times since 1979. That decides the value of most copies. A record pressed in these numbers is in millions of homes, and Discogs shows how many survive: about 25,600 users list the US Santa Maria pressing, about 20,200 the Pitman pressing, and about 25,600 an early UK repress. There is always another copy for sale.

That gives three rules of thumb, not quotes:

- **A played 1979 copy** without its inner sleeves is a listening copy and usually sells for less than a new reissue costs.
- **A clean, complete first issue** (sleeve, both printed inner sleeves, and the title sticker or insert where one was issued) sells for noticeably more, because complete copies with sharp corners and no split spine are much rarer than the record itself.
- **Real money** is paid for copies signed by the band, with provenance. The sales are listed further down.

Condition is the biggest variable. A double album with a heavy gatefold splits along the spine, and the cream sleeve shows ring wear and dirt easily. Grade the records and the sleeve separately, using our [vinyl grading guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-grading-guide/).

## The UK first pressing (Harvest SHDW 411): how to tell

Every UK copy from 1979 carries the catalogue number **SHDW 411**. The two discs have their own numbers, **SHSP 4111** and **SHSP 4112**, and international numbers **OC-158 63410** and **OC-158 63411**, printed on the inner sleeves.

Discogs separates the first issue from the repressings by the sleeve, not the labels. Check these points:

1. **No barcode** on the back cover.
2. **No band members inside.** The inside panel only says "Words and Music – Roger Waters. Except…" and "Produced by David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, Roger Waters". Repressings added the band-member credits.
3. **The wall is cream, not white**, and the bricks on the front do not run right to the bottom edge.
4. **Sleeve construction:** either one wrap-around sheet of card with a seam along the inner top edge, or two sheets of heavy card with seams at top and bottom. Both are first issues.
5. **Inner sleeves:** heavy card with rounded corners and a thumb notch, printed with Gerald Scarfe's wall design and the lyrics. Sides 2 and 4 carry SHDW 411, the OC-158 number and the SHSP disc number in the lower right corner. The lyrics are not in the album's running order.
6. **Title sticker:** some copies came with a clear plastic "Pink Floyd The Wall" title that clings to the front cover without being glued. Its absence does not make a copy a repress.
7. **Labels:** the first issue has picture labels.

One warning from Discogs itself: its original first-issue entry was merged by mistake with a later repress (release 367511), and the first issue was re-entered in 2023 as release 27371856. Older listings that cite the first number may be describing a repress. Our [first pressing identification guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/first-pressing-identification/) explains the general method.

## Reading the dead wax: SHSP numbers and the TML stamps

The runout area tells you which lacquers a copy was pressed from. Here is what UK copies carry:

- **The disc number and side**, stamped: `SHSP 4111 A` and `SHSP 4111 B` for record one, `SHSP 4112 A` and `SHSP 4112 B` for record two.
- **A lacquer number** with the EMI "U" suffix, for example `SHSP 4111 A-2U`.
- **A TML stamp**: `TML-X`, `TML-M` or `TML-S`. TML is The Mastering Lab in Los Angeles, where Doug Sax mastered the album and cut the lacquers.

A typical first-issue set reads `SHSP 4111 A-2U TML-X`, `SHSP 4111 B-2U TML-M`, `SHSP 4112 A-3U TML-X`, `SHSP 4112 B-2U TML-M`. Low numbers such as 1U, 2U and 3U are the early lacquers, but Discogs documents the same lacquers on repressings from 1980–82, and first-issue copies with 4U or 6U on one side also exist. So the matrix alone does not prove a first issue; the sleeve does. Use the dead wax to confirm a copy is a 1979–82 UK pressing from the original Mastering Lab cut, rather than a later reissue.

The same TML stamps appear on the US, German and French 1979 pressings, because every one of them was cut from Doug Sax's lacquers. Our guide to [runout and matrix numbers](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-runout-matrix-numbers-decoded/) covers the general system.

## The US first pressing (Columbia PC2 36183)

In North America the album was issued by Columbia as **PC2 36183**. The two discs are **C 36184** and **C 36185**; the labels read `AL 36184`, `BL 36184`, `AL 36185` and `BL 36185`. The etched runouts begin `PAL-36184`, `PBL-36184`, `PAL-36185` and `PBL-36185`, followed by a lacquer code (1A, 1D, 1F and so on) and a stamped `TML-X`, `TML-M` or `TML-S`.

What separates an early US copy:

- **The first-issue gatefold** has "Produced By: David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, Roger Waters" as the top credit on the right inside panel, with "Words and Music Roger Waters Except…". Later sleeves put "Written By: Roger Waters…" at the top.
- **No barcode.** A later pressing with a printed barcode exists (Discogs release 1862962, 1982).
- **The pressing plant** shows in the runout: a stamped `P` for Pitman, New Jersey, and an `S` for Santa Maria, California. Both are first pressings.
- **The insert:** many copies came with a loose printed paper slip reading "Pink Floyd The Wall 36183", held under the factory shrink-wrap. It is a paper insert, not a sticker.

**Promotional copies.** A genuine US promo has "Demonstration Not For Sale" printed on the labels. Copies with only a gold "For Promotion Only" stamp on the back cover, or a radio timing strip, and normal labels are counted by Discogs as retail copies. Our guide to [promos, white labels and test pressings](https://vinylai.app/guides/promo-white-label-and-test-pressings/) explains why this matters when you buy one.

## Other 1979 national editions

*The Wall* was pressed in many countries in 1979, each with its own catalogue number:

- **Canada: Columbia PC2 36183** (some copies XPC2 36183), pressed at Don Mills, Ontario, with runouts such as `AL-36184-2A`. Discogs notes that all Canadian copies came with a rectangular "Pink Floyd The Wall" sticker on the shrink-wrap.
- **Germany: 1C 198-63 410/11.** The labels carry Harvest, the sleeves credit EMI Electrola; it is one edition, not a cheap and a dear one. Runouts read `63 410-A-0 TML M`. One variant has "Written by Roger Waters" inside the gatefold and the lyrics out of order on the inners.
- **France: Harvest 2C 168-63 410/11**, pressed by Pathé Marconi at Chatou, with TML stamps in the runout.
- **Netherlands: Harvest 1A 158-63410 / 1A 158-63411**, with lacquers cut locally at Bovema.
- **Japan: CBS/Sony 40AP 1750~1**, with a blue "cap" obi priced ¥4,000, two lyric inner sleeves, a four-page Japanese insert and a transparent title sticker. Discogs warns that most Japanese "promo" copies are regular copies with a hand-stamped label; genuine factory-printed promo labels are very rare.
- **Australia and New Zealand: CBS S2BP 220216.** The first Australian issue credits Penjane as publisher, a later one Chappell; some copies carry a "Movie" hype sticker.

A complete copy of any of these with its inserts is a good record. None is rare in the way a signed copy is.

## Every notable edition in one table

Discogs lists 282 vinyl versions of *The Wall* (master 11329, checked 12 October 2026). The table picks the first issues by country, the plant and promo variants, and the reissues that matter, with the side A runout. It shows identification details only.

The editions worth knowing beyond 1979:

- **Columbia H2C 46183 (US, 1982)**, a CBS Mastersound "Half-Speed Mastered" edition, mastered by Bruce Leek at KM Records. It came in a PVC outer sleeve with stickers and a four-page lyric insert. That insert has a known typo: in "Mother" it prints "Mother, am I really dying?", a line the record does not play.
- **Harvest SHDW 411 (2012)**, a 180g reissue cut at The Mastering Lab, pressed by Optimal Media, with a new poster and a download code. The barcode is only on a sticker.
- **Pink Floyd Records PFRLP11 (2016 onwards)**, remastered from the original analogue tapes by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman, who cut the lacquers (`BG` in the runout). This is the edition on sale new today.

**There is no Mobile Fidelity vinyl of *The Wall*.** Mobile Fidelity issued the album as a 24-karat gold CD; Discogs lists no Mobile Fidelity LP among the 282 vinyl versions. The half-speed LP of the period is Columbia's own H2C 46183.

## Documented sales: what the expensive copies were

These are the high-value sales of *The Wall* we could verify on 12 October 2026. All are signed copies; prices include the buyer's premium.

| Item | Result | Where and when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Album signed on the front cover by David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and Roger Waters, records included | $16,643 | RR Auction, lot 6032 (John Brennan Music Collection, auction #556), ended 16 May 2019 |
| Promotional copy signed by all four, record included, with a letter listing the signing dates | $16,478 | RR Auction, lot 567 (auction #558), ended 12 June 2019 |
| Cover inscribed "To David" and signed by all four, record not included | $11,182 | RR Auction, lot 7144 (auction #494), ended 1 March 2017 |
| Album signed by all four and by Gerald Scarfe, record included | $10,208 | RR Auction, lot 774 (auction #583), ended 13 May 2020 |
| Columbia 2LP signed by all four | Estimate $10,000–15,000; result not public | Sotheby's, Rock & Roll sale, lot 90, April 2023 |

The value in every one of these is the four signatures and their authentication, not the pressing. We found no auction or press record of an unsigned copy selling above $5,000; the highest documented sale is $16,643 for a copy signed by all four (RR Auction lot 6032, May 2019).

## Quick reference: catalogue numbers and runouts by edition

When you check a copy of *The Wall*, compare it against the numbers below, taken from the Discogs entries for each edition and from Wikipedia's mastering credits.

| Edition | Catalogue number | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| UK, 1979 | Harvest SHDW 411 (discs SHSP 4111 / SHSP 4112) | Picture labels; runouts like `SHSP 4111 A-2U TML-X`; no barcode, no band credits inside on the first issue |
| US, 1979 | Columbia PC2 36183 (discs C 36184 / C 36185) | Runouts beginning `PAL-36184`, a `P` or `S` plant mark, a TML stamp; "Produced By" at the top of the inside panel on the first issue |
| Canada, 1979 | Columbia PC2 36183 / XPC2 36183 | Pressed at Don Mills; runouts like `AL-36184-2A` |
| Germany, 1979 | 1C 198-63 410/11 | Harvest on the labels, EMI Electrola on the sleeve; runouts like `63 410-A-0 TML M` |
| France, 1979 | Harvest 2C 168-63 410/11 | Pathé Marconi, Chatou; TML stamps |
| Japan, 1979 | CBS/Sony 40AP 1750~1 | Blue cap obi (¥4,000), four-page insert, transparent title sticker |
| Australia / New Zealand, 1979 | CBS S2BP 220216 | Penjane publishing credit on the first Australian issue |
| US half-speed, 1982 | Columbia H2C 46183 | "Half-Speed Mastered" on the cover; runouts beginning `HAL 46184` |
| Current remaster, 2016 onwards | Pink Floyd Records PFRLP11 | `BG` (Bernie Grundman) in the runout |

Two details apply across the 1979 editions. The album was mastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab in Los Angeles, which is why UK, US, German and French copies carry `TML-X`, `TML-M` or `TML-S` stamps. And the Mobile Fidelity edition of *The Wall* is a gold CD, not an LP. The same reading method works for the other Pink Floyd albums of the decade; our [Dark Side of the Moon value guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/dark-side-of-the-moon-vinyl-value-guide/) covers the 1973 Harvest and Capitol editions.

## Which edition of The Wall to buy

| If you want… | Buy | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The original sound, cheaply | A clean 1979 UK SHDW 411 or US PC2 36183 with TML stamps in the runout | Doug Sax's original cut, pressed in huge numbers. Choose on condition and completeness. |
| A collectable first issue | A UK copy with no barcode, no band credits inside, both card inner sleeves | The details Discogs uses to separate the first issue; buy on photos of the inside panel. |
| A new copy | Pink Floyd Records PFRLP11 | The current 180g remaster, in print and widely available. |
| A period audiophile edition | Columbia H2C 46183 (1982) | The CBS half-speed master; check for the insert and the PVC sleeve. |

If you collect the band's 1970s albums together, the same approach works for [Animals](https://vinylai.app/guides/pink-floyd-animals-vinyl-value-guide/), which also has its own pressing tells.

## Check your copy in a minute

Open the gatefold first. If the right inside panel names no band members and the back has no barcode, you probably hold a UK first issue; on a US copy, look for "Produced By" at the top of that panel. Then read the four runouts, check that both printed inner sleeves are there, and photograph the inside panel and the dead wax before you list it.

VinylAI can do the matching for you: photograph the label and the app identifies which pressing of *The Wall* you have and adds it to your collection. If you plan to sell, our guide on [how to sell vinyl records](https://vinylai.app/guides/how-to-sell-vinyl-records/) covers listing and shipping; for a sealed copy, read [how sealed records are valued](https://vinylai.app/guides/sealed-vinyl-records-value/) first, because a reseal is hard to spot.

## FAQ: The Wall vinyl value

How can I tell if my The Wall vinyl is a first pressing?

On a UK copy, look for Harvest SHDW 411, no barcode on the back, a cream brick wall, and an inside panel that names no band members (only "Words and Music – Roger Waters" and "Produced by David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, Roger Waters"). Both inner sleeves should be heavy printed card. On a US copy (Columbia PC2 36183), the first-issue gatefold has "Produced By" at the top of the right inside panel and no barcode.

How much is Pink Floyd The Wall album worth?

A typical played 1979 copy is worth listening-copy money, because the album was certified 23× platinum in the US and Discogs lists 282 vinyl versions. A clean, complete first issue with both inner sleeves is worth more. The highest documented sales are signed copies: $16,643 at RR Auction in May 2019 and $16,478 in June 2019.

What do the matrix numbers on The Wall mean?

UK runouts read SHSP 4111 A/B (record one) and SHSP 4112 A/B (record two), with a lacquer number such as 2U and a TML-X, TML-M or TML-S stamp from The Mastering Lab, where Doug Sax cut the lacquers. US runouts begin PAL-36184 or PBL-36185, with a P (Pitman) or S (Santa Maria) plant mark and the same TML stamps. Low lacquer numbers are early, but they also appear on 1980–82 repressings.

What's the most valuable The Wall pressing?

The copies that fetch serious money are signed by Gilmour, Mason, Wright and Waters: RR Auction sold one for $16,643 in May 2019 and a signed promo for $16,478 in June 2019. Among unsigned records, collectors prefer a complete UK first issue or a genuine US promo with "Demonstration Not For Sale" printed on the labels.

Is there a Mobile Fidelity version of The Wall on vinyl?

No. Mobile Fidelity issued *The Wall* as a 24-karat gold CD, and Discogs lists no Mobile Fidelity LP among the album's 282 vinyl versions. The audiophile LP from the period is Columbia's own half-speed mastered edition, H2C 46183 (1982), mastered by Bruce Leek. Today's standard vinyl is the Pink Floyd Records PFRLP11 remaster cut by Bernie Grundman.

Is the US Columbia pressing of The Wall worth less than the UK Harvest one?

Both are first pressings cut from the same Doug Sax lacquers at The Mastering Lab, and both were made in very large numbers: Discogs users list about 25,600 copies of the US Santa Maria pressing alone. UK first issues are more sought after by collectors who want the original British release, but condition and completeness decide the price of either far more than the country does.

Which version of The Wall vinyl should I buy to listen to?

For the original sound, a clean 1979 UK or US copy with TML stamps in the runout is easy to find. For a new copy, the Pink Floyd Records PFRLP11 remaster (2016 onwards) is in print. For a period audiophile pressing, look for the 1982 Columbia half-speed master, H2C 46183, complete with its lyric insert.
