# Thriller Vinyl Value Guide: 1982 First Pressing, Misprints and What Your Copy Is Really Worth

**An ordinary 1982 copy of Michael Jackson's *Thriller* is a common record**, and a played one is usually worth less than a new reissue costs. Epic released the album in the US on 29 November 1982, it has sold an estimated 70 million copies, and Discogs lists 248 vinyl versions; about 67,000 Discogs users list just one of the 1982 US pressings. You can recognise a US original in a minute: **Epic QE 38112** on the spine and labels, a gatefold with the tiger-cub photo inside, a lyric inner sleeve with Michael's drawings, and `PAL 38112` / `PBL 38112` etched in the dead wax. The copies that fetch real money are signed ones with a letter of authenticity, and this guide names the documented sales. It also explains the two things people call the Thriller "misprint", and which reissue to buy.

By VinylAI Editorial Updated October 12, 2026

## Key Takeaways

- The US original is Epic QE 38112 (29 November 1982): a gatefold with the tiger-cub photo, a lyric inner sleeve, and PAL 38112 / PBL 38112 etched in the dead wax with a plant mark such as P (Pitman) or G1 (Carrollton).
- The earliest sleeves leave Michael Jackson's co-producer credit off the back cover; Discogs treats copies with the credit as second pressings or later.
- Thriller is extremely common: an estimated 70 million sold, 248 vinyl versions on Discogs, and about 67,000 Discogs users listing one 1982 US pressing. A played copy is a listening copy.
- The highest documented Thriller vinyl sale we found is $7,854 for a promo copy signed by Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones (RR Auction, June 2025).

## What a 1982 Thriller is really worth

The honest answer for most readers: **a played 1982 copy of *Thriller* is a listening copy**. That is a rule of thumb, not a quote, and it follows from supply. Wikipedia puts the album's worldwide sales at an estimated 70 million, and the RIAA had certified it 34 times platinum in the US by August 2021. One of the 1982 US pressings alone is in the collections of about 67,000 Discogs users. There is always another copy.

For scale: a new standard reissue LP was $22.99 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum store on 12 October 2026. A worn original with ring wear and a split seam will usually sell for less than that. A clean, quiet early copy with its inner sleeve sells for more, and condition decides how much more.

Three things move a *Thriller* out of listening-copy territory:

- **A genuine signature.** The documented five-figure money for this album is in autographs, not in pressings. See the sales table below.
- **A verified early copy in top condition**, ideally the first-run sleeve without the co-producer credit, or a copy still in its original shrink with the first hype sticker.
- **Variants with a story**: promo copies with the gold "For Promotion Only" stamp, the Adam and the Ants label mispress, and the period picture discs.

Grade your copy with the [Goldmine grading scale](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-grading-guide/) before you price it.

## The 1982 US original (Epic QE 38112): how to tell

Every US copy from 1982 carries the catalogue number **QE 38112** on the spine and labels; the gatefold and inner sleeve carry the short form 38112. Check these points:

1. **Sleeve:** a gatefold. Opened, it shows Michael reclining with a tiger cub at his leg. Every 1982 copy has this, so the tiger cub alone does not make a first pressing.
2. **Inner sleeve:** a printed dust sleeve with the lyrics, credits and drawings by Michael Jackson. A copy without it is incomplete.
3. **Labels:** the label matrix reads `AL 38112` on side A and `BL 38112` on side B.
4. **Dead wax:** etched `PAL 38112` on side A and `PBL 38112` on side B, followed by a lacquer suffix such as `-2D` or `-2CF`. Discogs lists dozens of suffix combinations, so no single suffix marks "the" first pressing.
5. **Plant mark:** a small stamped or etched `P` means Columbia's Pitman, New Jersey plant; an etched `G1` means Carrollton, Georgia. A stamped `o` marks plating at Customatrix.

The album credits mastering to **Bernie Grundman**. A "STERLING" stamp in the dead wax means the 2008 *Thriller 25* reissue (see below). Our guide to [reading runout and matrix numbers](https://vinylai.app/guides/vinyl-runout-matrix-numbers-decoded/) explains the codes in general.

## The first-run sleeve and the Thriller "misprint"

When people search for a "Thriller misprint", they usually mean one of two documented variants.

**1. The sleeve without Michael's co-producer credit.** The earliest US jackets credit Quincy Jones as producer but do not include the line naming Michael Jackson as co-producer on the back cover. Later jackets add it. Discogs notes treat the jacket without the credit as the first US sleeve and the one with it as a second pressing or later. The same applies outside the US: early UK sleeves also lack the line, and the Japanese edition exists in both forms. Check the back-cover credits first. This is the most useful single test for an early copy.

**2. The Adam and the Ants label.** Discogs documents a Pitman-pressed US copy whose side 1 carries a label from an Adam and the Ants record instead of the *Thriller* label. It is a factory mix-up of the kind every big plant produced, and it is a genuine curiosity. Make sure the record under the wrong label really is *Thriller* before you buy one: play it, or check that the dead wax reads `PAL 38112`.

**The early hype sticker.** Some first-run copies still in shrink carry a sticker that reads "Features the smash hit 'The Girl Is Mine' with Paul McCartney". Stickers that mention a "Grammy Nominee", "8 Grammy awards" or "the biggest selling album in music history" show that the copy was wrapped later. A Discogs entry with the Grammy-winner sticker dates that copy to 1984 or later.

## UK, European, Japanese and Canadian pressings

Outside North America, *Thriller* had its own catalogue numbers:

- **UK: Epic EPC 85930.** A gatefold with a printed lyric inner sleeve, made by Shorewood Packaging. Early sleeves misspell the packaging credit as "Interepak" and lack Michael's co-producer line. Some copies were cut by Tim Young, with `timtom` etched in the runout (for example `EPC-85930 A2 C timtom`). Others were pressed at CBS Aston Clinton with runouts like `EPC . 85930 A1`.
- **Netherlands and continental Europe: EPC 85930**, pressed by CBS in Haarlem. The runout reads `01-85930-1A-1 PAL 38112-HOL`, so it carries both numbers. This Dutch pressing was sold across Europe and is the most-owned *Thriller* on Discogs, with about 50,000 users listing it. That makes it very common, not rare.
- **Japan: Epic 25·3P-399.** It came with an obi, a fold-out booklet whose last pages open into a poster, and a Japanese information sheet. Runouts begin `25-3P-399A1`. The Japanese pressing is a nice copy, but it is not a rarity. The obi and booklet must be present for it to sell as complete.
- **Canada: QE 38112**, cut and pressed at Columbia's Don Mills plant, with runouts like `AL-38112-1B-2HZ:`. Like US copies, early Canadian jackets lack the co-producer credit.
- **Australia and New Zealand:** ELPS 4328. **Mexico:** LNS-17406. **Brazil:** 144.776.

None of these is a rare first pressing in the collector sense. All the national 1982 pressings count as originals, and condition decides what each is worth. In Japan, Discogs lists three LP editions: the 1982 25·3P-399, the limited picture disc 28·3P-455 and the 1984 reissue 30·3P-431. The catalogue number on the obi and spine tells them apart.

## Every notable Thriller pressing in one table

Discogs lists 248 vinyl versions of *Thriller* (master 8883, checked 12 October 2026). The table picks the first issues by country, the US plant and sleeve variants, the misprint, the club edition, the picture discs and the reissues that matter, with the side A runout. Match your copy's catalogue number and dead wax to a row.

If your runout matches none of them, check the full list on Discogs before you assume anything. Unofficial pressings exist, and our guide to [spotting a fake or bootleg record](https://vinylai.app/guides/how-to-spot-a-fake-or-bootleg-vinyl-record/) covers the signs.

## Picture discs, promos and club copies

**Picture discs.** Three period picture discs are real:

- **US: Epic 8E8-38867 (1983)**, in a poly sleeve with a sticker titled "The Official Michael Jackson Picture Disc". Its runout is the standard `PAL 38112` / `PBL 38112`.
- **UK: Epic EPC 11-85930 (1983)**, pressed by Orlake, with `ORLAKE` etched in the runout.
- **Japan: Epic 28·3P-455**, a limited edition.

Be careful with picture discs. Sony reissued *Thriller* as a picture disc in 2008 (88697353391) and again in 2018, and those copies are far more common than the 1983 discs. Discogs also lists several unofficial picture discs, including one that copies the Japanese catalogue number and another that copies EPC 85930. A picture disc with no runout matching the official ones is not an original.

**Promo copies.** US promos are regular pressings with a gold stamp on the back cover: "FOR PROMOTION ONLY / Ownership Reserved by CBS / Sale is Unlawful". Some came with press information. Our guide to [promos, white labels and test pressings](https://vinylai.app/guides/promo-white-label-and-test-pressings/) explains how promo copies are valued in general.

**Club copies.** In Europe a club edition (EPCCL 46 725 8) used the standard Haarlem record in a jacket marked "CLUB EDITION". The vinyl is identical, but collectors prefer the retail jacket.

## Documented Thriller sales

These are the high-value *Thriller* records we could verify, each with the auction house, lot and date:

| Item | Result | Where and when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Promo copy ("For Promotional Only" stamp) signed by Michael Jackson inside the gatefold and by Quincy Jones on the front, both inscribed to "Michelle", with the record | $7,854 incl. buyer's premium (estimate $2,500+) | RR Auction, auction 718 "Marvels of Modern Music", lot 9434, ended 19 June 2025 |
| Album signed by Michael Jackson on the front cover, uninscribed, with the record | $5,086 incl. buyer's premium (estimate $3,000+) | RR Auction, auction 612, lot 859, ended 14 July 2021 |

Both lots came with a letter of authenticity from a third-party authenticator (REAL, and JSA plus REAL). Jackson autographs are widely forged, and an unauthenticated "signed Thriller" is worth little more than the record under it.

We found no auction or press record of an unsigned copy selling above $5,000; the highest documented sale is the $7,854 signed promo above (RR Auction, June 2025). If you have a sealed or unusual copy, its value has to be tested by selling it, not looked up.

## Reissues and audiophile editions

The reissues worth knowing, with how to recognise each:

- **CBS Mastersound half-speed (HE 48112).** An audiophile edition that Discogs lists as 1982. It was cut at half speed by Bruce Leek at International Automated Media from Bernie Grundman's master, and pressed at Carrollton. The runout reads `HAL 48112` … `IAMC`. It is the period audiophile *Thriller*.
- ***Thriller 25* (2008, Legacy 88697233441).** A 2LP edition with bonus tracks, cut by Ray Janos at Sterling Sound. The runout shows `RJ STERLING`, which is the only "Sterling" *Thriller* on vinyl.
- **Standard reissue (2015 onward, 88875143731).** The in-print black LP, repressed many times and sold new for around $23. A listening copy, not a collectible.
- **Mobile Fidelity UltraDisc One-Step (2022, UD1S 1-042).** Limited to 40,000 numbered copies, 180 g, pressed at RTI, in a box with a fold-out poster. MoFi lists the chain as "1/2" / 30 IPS analog master to DSD 256 to analog console to lathe", so it passed through a digital (DSD) step. The runout reads `UD1S 1-042` with `KW@MoFi`. MoFi's price was $100.

If you collect the next album too, our [Michael Jackson Bad vinyl guide](https://vinylai.app/guides/michael-jackson-bad-vinyl-value-guide/) covers its 1987 pressings and MoFi edition.

## Which Thriller to buy, and how to check yours

| If you want… | Buy | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The original sound, cheaply | A clean 1982 QE 38112 or EPC 85930 with its lyric inner sleeve | Bernie Grundman's original master, easy to find. Pick on condition. |
| An early copy to keep | A US copy whose back cover lacks the co-producer credit | The first-run sleeve, documented on Discogs. |
| A new copy as a gift | The current Epic reissue | In print and inexpensive. |
| The audiophile version | The 1982 half-speed HE 48112 or the 2022 MoFi One-Step | Half-speed cut from the original master, or MoFi's numbered 180 g edition. |

To check your own copy, look at four things in this order: the catalogue number on the spine, the back-cover credits (is the co-producer line there?), the dead wax (`PAL 38112` plus a plant mark) and the inner sleeve. If you have a phone handy, VinylAI reads the label and matches it to the pressing, so you know which row of the table you are holding before you list it.

To sell an ordinary original, use a marketplace where buyers search by pressing details: list the catalogue number, plant mark, runout, sleeve variant and grade. For a signed copy, go to an autograph auction house that requires third-party authentication. Our guide on [identifying first pressings](https://vinylai.app/guides/first-pressing-identification/) applies the same method to any album.

## FAQ: Thriller vinyl value

How much is a 1982 Michael Jackson Thriller album worth?

A typical 1982 copy is worth listening-copy money, usually less than a new reissue, which sold for $22.99 at the Rock Hall store in October 2026. The album sold an estimated 70 million copies, and about 67,000 Discogs users list just one US pressing. Value rises with condition, a complete inner sleeve and the early sleeve without Michael's co-producer credit. Real money is paid for authenticated signed copies.

How can I tell if my Thriller vinyl is an original first pressing?

A US original has Epic QE 38112 on the spine and labels, a gatefold with the tiger-cub photo inside, and a lyric inner sleeve with Michael's drawings. The dead wax reads PAL 38112 and PBL 38112, with a plant mark such as P (Pitman) or G1 (Carrollton). The earliest sleeves do not list Michael Jackson as co-producer on the back cover; later ones do.

What is the Thriller vinyl misprint?

Two variants are documented. The first-run sleeve leaves Michael Jackson's co-producer credit off the back cover; Discogs treats it as the first US sleeve. Separately, a Pitman-pressed US copy exists with an Adam and the Ants label on side 1 instead of the Thriller label, a factory mix-up. Check that the dead wax reads PAL 38112 before paying extra for a mislabelled copy.

What is the most valuable Thriller record ever sold?

The highest documented Thriller vinyl sale we could verify is $7,854 for a promo copy signed by Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones, at RR Auction in June 2025. A copy signed by Jackson alone made $5,086 there in July 2021. Both came with letters of authenticity.

Is the Thriller picture disc worth anything?

The period picture discs are the US Epic 8E8-38867 from 1983, the UK EPC 11-85930 pressed by Orlake, and the Japanese limited 28·3P-455. They are collectible, but Sony reissued the picture disc in 2008 and 2018, and those copies are far more common. Unofficial picture discs also exist. Check the catalogue number and the runout against the official ones before you value a picture disc as an original.

Is a sealed 1982 Thriller worth more?

A genuinely sealed first-run copy is worth more than an open one, but check the hype sticker before you believe the date. The early sticker mentions "The Girl Is Mine" with Paul McCartney. Stickers that mention Grammys or "the biggest selling album in music history" were applied in 1984 or later. Because Thriller stayed in print, a sealed copy is not automatically a 1982 copy.

Which Thriller vinyl sounds best?

Most listeners are happy with a clean 1982 original, which carries Bernie Grundman's master. Collectors who want an audiophile pressing look at the CBS Mastersound half-speed HE 48112, cut by Bruce Leek from the same master, or at the 2022 Mobile Fidelity One-Step, limited to 40,000 numbered copies. MoFi states that the One-Step was transferred through DSD 256. The in-print standard reissue is the cheapest new option.
