Vinyl Record Scanner - VinylAI

Snap a record. Find out what it is, inside ChatGPT.

VinylAI checks your photo against a catalog of 8.6 million vinyl, shellac and flexi releases. You get the album, the pressings it could be, and what was actually read on your photo.

Add VinylAI to ChatGPT

  1. Open Vinyl Record Scanner - VinylAI in the ChatGPT plugin directory and choose Install plugin.
  2. In any chat, attach a photo of the cover, the label or the runout, or type what you see, and ask what the record is.
  3. To keep a record, say "save it to my collection". VinylAI asks you to sign in with your email the first time. Identifying records needs no sign-in.

Which pressing do I have?

Popular albums have hundreds of pressings, and a cover photo cannot tell them apart. VinylAI is straight about that. Every answer comes at one of three levels, and it always says which one it reached and what would narrow it further.

  1. The album

A photo of the cover is enough to name the album, and VinylAI tells you how many pressings the catalog holds for it. For The Dark Side of the Moon that is 671.

  2. A group of pressings

Add the catalog number, the label or the runout etching and the list narrows to the pressings that match everything read. VinylAI shows which details still differ inside the group: country, year, label variant, format.

  3. One exact pressing

When the catalog holds a single pressing with everything you read, VinylAI names it. When it does not, it says so and asks for the detail that would settle it, instead of guessing.

Works best with a clear photo of the label or the runout in the dead wax. You can also type what you see: a catalog number, a barcode, the matrix lines. When the catalog shows the earliest pressing it knows of, VinylAI says so and labels it as catalog data.

Try asking

Start with one of these in ChatGPT.

  • What record is this? (attach a photo of the cover or label)
  • Which pressing has catalog number SHVL 804?
  • What's in my VinylAI collection?

Keep your collection

Sign in with your email once and say "save it as VG+". The record goes into your VinylAI collection with its condition and notes. Ask "what's in my collection?" any time. The same collection opens in the VinylAI app on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android when you sign in there with the same email.

Every record links to its Discogs page and to VinylAI.

What it does not do

VinylAI in ChatGPT does not give prices or valuations. It cannot delete or edit records: do that in the app. And when it is not sure of a match, it says so and asks for the label or the runout instead of naming a record it cannot back up.

Your data

The photo you attach is read in memory and not stored. You can disconnect VinylAI in ChatGPT at any time, and delete your account in the app or by email. Details: privacy policy and support.

Questions

Is there a ChatGPT app that identifies vinyl records?

Yes. Vinyl Record Scanner - VinylAI is published in the ChatGPT plugin directory. Attach a photo of a record or type its catalog number, and it names the album and narrows down the pressing against a catalog of 8.6 million vinyl, shellac and flexi releases.

Do I need a VinylAI account to use it?

Not to identify records. You sign in with your email only when you save a record to your VinylAI collection, and the same collection then opens in the VinylAI app.

Which photo works best?

A sharp photo of the label or of the runout etching in the dead wax. A cover photo is enough to name the album, but only the label, the catalog number or the runout can tell pressings apart.

Does it tell me what my record is worth?

No. VinylAI in ChatGPT identifies records and keeps your collection. It does not give prices or valuations.

Does it work in Claude or other AI assistants?

The same catalog is available in Claude as a connector, and developers can connect the MCP server directly. See the section for developers below.

For developers: the MCP server

VinylAI in ChatGPT runs on a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) at https://api.vinylai.app/mcp/vinyl-record-scanner. Tools: identify_record, find_pressing, get_release, save_to_collection, list_collection. identify_record reads photos attached in ChatGPT; find_pressing takes a catalog number, label, barcode or runout lines. The catalog tools work without sign-in; the collection tools use OAuth 2.1 with an email code.

Claude has its own endpoint with Claude-specific tool descriptions: https://api.vinylai.app/mcp/claude/vinyl-record-scanner (VinylAI in Claude). Record store and guide data has a separate read-only MCP server and a JSON API with no key: vinylai.app/api.
