About Various vinyl records
Various reggae compilations on vinyl span from the early 1980s through the 2010s, pressed across Elektra and Trojan Records—two labels central to reggae's vinyl distribution. Reggae Sunsplash '81 A Tribute To Bob Marley emerged in 1982 as a US Elektra release capturing the festival's live energy, while decades later Trojan Records, the UK reggae imprint, issued the Trojan 50 Box Set in 2018 as a retrospective. These releases document how reggae compilations functioned both as event documentation and as catalogue surveys, making them sought after by reggae collectors and those tracking label history.
Most collected Various reggae pressings
Reggae Sunsplash '81 A Tribute To Bob Marley stands as a key 1980s compilation, issued on Elektra catalogue E1-60035 in the United States. The Trojan 50 Box Set, released in 2018 under catalogue TROJAN50, represents a later comprehensive retrospective from Trojan Records, distributed across UK and Europe. First pressings of the Sunsplash title carry the original Elektra label stock and matrix markings specific to that 1982 pressing run. The Trojan box set, being a multi-disc retrospective, differs fundamentally in construction and collectibility from single-LP compilations, appealing to those seeking a broader survey of the label's catalogue.
What drives Various reggae record values
Reggae compilations derive collector interest from several pressing-specific factors. A first pressing of Reggae Sunsplash '81 A Tribute To Bob Marley on Elektra carries original-era label design and runout matrix characteristics that distinguish it from any later reissue. Country of origin—US for the Elektra release versus UK and Europe for Trojan issues—affects availability and desirability in different markets. Mono versus stereo pressings, where applicable, shift collector priorities. Special editions, particularly box sets like the Trojan 50, command attention for their scope and packaging integrity. Condition of the vinyl surface, label clarity, and sleeve condition all influence how collectors assess these compilations relative to their pressing history.
Buying Various reggae vinyl
Collectors hunting early 1980s reggae compilations focus on Elektra's US pressings from that era, where original stock and pressing-plant codes in the runout matrix confirm authenticity and era. The Trojan 50 Box Set appeals to those building comprehensive reggae collections or documenting Trojan Records' influence. When evaluating a copy, verify the catalogue number against the label and sleeve—Reggae Sunsplash '81 A Tribute To Bob Marley should read E1-60035 on Elektra pressings. Check the runout matrix and label variant to confirm first-pressing status. A clean copy requires minimal surface noise, legible labels, and a sleeve free of seam splits or water damage. Original inner sleeves and inserts, where present, add to a purchase's appeal.
