About this record
Runouts are stamped in the dead wax of this German Mercury pressing, reading AA 823 356-1.1Y and AA 823 356-1.2Y, with a second set reading 823 356 - 1 1 Y 3 20 and 823 356 - 1 2 Y 3 20. Pressed at PRS Hannover, the LP carries catalogue number 823 356-1 and a barcode, and it was released in Germany in 1984 as Der Sinn Des Lebens by Wolfgang Ambros, Die No. 1 Vom Wienerwald.
Demand is steady rather than frantic: 500 collectors have it in their collection while 11 want it.
What drives its value
The price guide puts this pressing at 15.84 USD in Mint, 14.17 USD in Near Mint, 10.83 USD in VG+, and 7.50 USD in VG, with the lowest current listing at 2.50 USD. That spread from VG up to Mint is wide enough that grading decides most of the price, so a copy's condition matters more than its title alone.
The market is well supplied, with 53 copies currently for sale, which keeps the lower grades cheap. The release notes mention recording between February and May '84 and mixing in June at POWERSOUND FACTORY in Achau, NO, and the printed innersleeve and 4-page lyricsheet are part of the package buyers expect.
The record is not listed among other pressings in this data, so there is no reissue comparison to adjust its value against.
How to appraise this pressing
Confirm the pressing first by reading the runouts. Authentic copies should show AA 823 356-1.1Y and AA 823 356-1.2Y, plus the handwritten-style sets 823 356 - 1 1 Y 3 20 and 823 356 - 1 2 Y 3 20, all stamped rather than etched.
The catalogue number 823 356-1 should match the spine and labels, and the PRS Hannover plant identifier should be consistent with the vinyl's dead wax. Check for the barcode, the printed innersleeve, and the 4-page lyricsheet noted in the release details, since their absence suggests an incomplete or altered copy.
Grade the disc under good light, looking at both sides for surface wear and the sleeve for edge and seam condition.
