What goes wrong

From the troubleshooting table on page 10 of the AT-LP60X manual. The USB and headphone manuals print the same table; the Bluetooth manual adds rows for pairing.

SymptomCauseWhat to doManual
The platter does not spin. AC adapter not connected; belt slipped off the platter or not on the motor pulley; belt damaged. Connect the adapter. Put the belt back on the platter and over the brass motor pulley. Replace a damaged belt. AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 10
The platter spins, but there is no sound or it is too quiet. Wrong input on the amplifier; stylus damaged or not seated; PHONO/LINE switch set wrong. Check the amplifier input. Reseat or replace the stylus. On PHONO into an AUX/LINE input it is quiet: switch to LINE. On LINE into a PHONO input it is loud and distorted: switch to PHONO. AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 10
The stylus skips. Warped or scratched record. Check the record. AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 10
There is howling. Vibration from the floor, walls or nearby speakers; unstable surface. Reduce the vibration or move the deck to a stable surface. AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 10
Noise while the record plays. Dust on the stylus tip. Clean the tip with a stylus brush. AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 10
The sound is too fast or too slow. Wrong speed selected. Choose the right speed with the speed button. AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 10
Playback slows down or turns unevenly. The belt has stretched. Replace the belt. AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 10

Set up the AT-LP60X

The setup from the AT-LP60X manual, step by step on the model. Play these steps on the 3D model →

  1. Place it level. Put the turntable on a level surface, away from speakers, radios and phones. Why: Speaker vibration reaching the stylus is what the manual calls howling. Tip: Leave the AC adapter unplugged until the whole deck is assembled. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 4
  2. Fit the dust cover. Push the two hinges of the dust cover into the hinge holders at the back of the deck. Why: The cover lifts straight out of the holders again whenever you want it off. Tip: Open it fully before you work on the platter. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 4
  3. Seat the platter. Set the platter on the spindle and make sure it is fully seated. The belt comes already fitted under it. Why: A platter that is not fully down rubs and turns unevenly. Tip: Lower it gently; the spindle bearing is what the platter turns on. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 4
  4. Hook the belt on the pulley. Turn the platter until an opening lines up with the brass motor pulley. Pull the belt by its red ribbon, put it over the pulley without twisting it, then remove the ribbon. Why: The belt carries the motor's turn to the platter. Off the pulley, the platter does not spin. Tip: Clean, dry fingers: oil from skin makes a belt slip. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 4
  5. Mat and 45 adapter. Lay the felt mat on the platter. Put the 45 RPM adapter in its holder at the upper left. Why: The mat grips the record; the adapter centres singles with a large hole. Tip: Brush the felt now and then so dust does not end up on your records. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 4
  6. Free the arm, reset the mechanism. Remove the tie that holds the tonearm, press the arm lift button, and turn the platter by hand ten times in the direction of the arrow. Why: This resets the automatic mechanism and settles the belt on the pulley. Tip: Turn the platter, not the arm: the arm moves by itself on this deck. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 5
  7. Choose PHONO or LINE and connect. Set the switch on the back: PHONO for an amplifier's phono input (connect the ground wire too), LINE for an AUX input, powered speakers or a computer. Connect the cable: red to R, white to L. Why: The switch turns the built-in preamp on or off. Matching it to the input is the difference between too quiet, right, and distorted. Tip: Powered speakers with no phono input: use LINE. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 5
  8. Plug in the power. Connect the AC adapter. There is no power switch. If the platter starts turning, press STOP without touching the arm and wait for it to return. Why: The deck is always on standby once plugged in. Tip: Never push the arm back by hand while the mechanism is moving. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 5
  9. Take off the stylus guard. Pull the cartridge protector straight forward to remove it. Why: Pressing down can pull the stylus out of the cartridge, and then only a faint sound comes out. Tip: Keep the protector: it goes back on whenever you move the deck. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 6
  10. Play a record. Put a record on. Set the size selector to 12" or 7" and the speed button to 33 or 45, then press START. The arm moves to the record and lowers itself. Why: The size selector tells the arm where the record begins. Tip: Press the arm lift button to pause; press STOP to end and send the arm home. From: AT-LP60X user manual (2019), p. 6

Does the AT-LP60X need a protractor?

No. The AT-LP60X has no step for mounting or aligning a cartridge: the factory sets where the stylus sits. An alignment protractor is for turntables where you fit the cartridge yourself.
