The short answer: level the platter, not the plinth
If you only take one thing from this article: put the level on the platter (or on a record sitting on the platter), not on the plinth's top edge or on the turntable's outer casing. On a well-built deck the plinth, sub-platter, and platter are all machined parallel, so it doesn't matter which surface you check. On a cheaper direct-drive or belt-drive deck with plastic mouldings, a slightly uneven feet mount, or a platter that doesn't sit dead flat on its bearing, the plinth can read level while the platter itself is tilted by a small but real amount.
This distinction is the part almost every setup guide skips, and it's the reason people "level" their turntable with the feet, still hear a skip, and assume the record or the cartridge is at fault. The platter is the only surface that matters because it's the only surface the record and stylus actually touch. If you've just unboxed a new deck, checking this before you do anything else avoids one of the most common turntable setup mistakes new owners make — assuming the unit is level because it looks level.
Why level matters to the groove
A record groove is cut with walls on either side that the stylus rides against, and the whole tracking system — counterweight, anti-skate, tracking force settings — is calibrated assuming gravity pulls the stylus straight down into the groove, evenly. When the platter tilts, gravity still pulls straight down, but the groove surface is no longer perpendicular to that pull. The stylus ends up pressing harder against one groove wall than the other, which is exactly the kind of sideways force cartridges are not designed to handle well.
The practical result is uneven tracing: one channel picks up more distortion than the other, the stylus wears unevenly along its contact edge, and on more affected copies the stylus can lose contact entirely on louder or more heavily modulated passages, causing it to skip or repeat a groove. Because this force compounds with any warp or eccentricity already in the pressing, a slightly tilted deck can turn a record that plays fine on a level turntable into one that consistently misbehaves. This is also why two people can play the same copy of a record — one reporting it's fine, one reporting it skips — with the difference coming down to setup rather than the vinyl.
Where to put the level
Use a small bubble level or your phone, and check in at least two orientations: front-to-back and left-to-right, ideally with a couple of diagonal checks too, since a plinth can be level on one axis and tilted on the other. Place it directly on the platter mat if the mat is thin and firm (felt, thin rubber), or on a flat record if the mat is thick, textured, or a soft rubber that could rock the level itself. A heavier pressing — a 180g vinyl pressing, for example — actually gives you a more stable, flatter reference surface than a thin, slightly warped 90g pressing, so if you're checking with a record on the platter, pick your flattest one.

Skip checking the dust cover, the plinth's underside feet housing, or the cabinet the deck sits on as a proxy — none of those tell you what the platter itself is doing.
Bubble level versus phone app
A basic bubble (spirit) level is a purely mechanical reference and, for the small size relevant to a turntable, is generally accurate enough that its own margin of error isn't the limiting factor — the bigger risk is a cheap level with an uneven bubble tube giving a false reading. A phone app using the built-in accelerometer is a genuinely useful, free alternative, and for most home listening a phone app level turntable check is perfectly adequate: it reads out a numeric angle rather than making you eyeball a bubble against two lines, which is easier to interpret.
The catch with a phone app is contact. Phones have thick cases, curved backs, and camera bumps that can rock on a platter mat, giving a false reading before you've even started. Lay the phone flat against a hard, even surface — a flat record label area or a thin mat — and check the reading in more than one rotation to confirm it's consistent. Between the two, use whichever one you'll actually reach for: a $10 bubble level that lives in your record crate gets used more than an app you have to remember exists.
How level is level enough
This is the question every other guide skips, and it matters because chasing perfect level on a turntable is largely wasted effort. As a rule of thumb, if a bubble sits comfortably between its centre lines, or a phone app reads within roughly half a degree to a degree, that's tight enough for normal listening — you are extremely unlikely to hear a difference between that and mechanical perfection. What actually causes audible problems is a visible, consistent lean: a bubble sitting hard against one end of its tube, or a phone reading several degrees off, not a fraction of a degree of imperfection.
Context matters more than the number. A warped record already puts the stylus through more vertical and lateral movement than a level turntable ever will on its own, so worrying about a half-degree of plinth tilt while ignoring a dished, warp that happened during pressing or storage is solving the wrong problem. Level the deck once, confirm it holds over a few weeks (feet do settle, especially on carpet), and then spend your attention on record condition and cartridge setup — that's where the real gains are.
Adjustable feet, and decks without them
Most turntables above entry level have feet that screw up or down individually, letting you dial out tilt without adding anything under the deck. Work one corner at a time: level front-to-back first using the two feet on one side as your reference, then level left-to-right, and recheck both axes since adjusting one often nudges the other slightly. This is a five-minute job the first time you set up a deck, and it's worth doing before you even cue up a record — it's one of the quiet first mistakes new turntable owners make, skipping it because the deck looks level on the shelf.
Cheaper decks — many all-in-one and suitcase-style players, and some entry belt-drives — have fixed rubber feet with no adjustment at all. If the surface underneath is even slightly uneven, your only real options are thin shims: folded card, a few layers of electrical tape, or specifically-made turntable shim kits placed under the low corner or corners. Avoid coins or anything hard and small enough to shift under vibration; you want something that spreads the load slightly. If the deck rocks on three feet with one permanently in the air, that's a manufacturing or shelf problem, not something shims will reliably fix long-term.
The surface underneath: flex and footfall
What should a turntable sit on matters as much as how level it is, because a level deck on a flexing surface won't stay level under use. Thin veneer shelves, glass shelves on brackets, and stacked furniture (turntable on top of a wobbly media unit) all flex slightly under the vibration of the motor and under footfall — someone walking past, a bass-heavy track, a subwoofer nearby — and that flex reintroduces the same sideways stylus force that a tilted deck causes, just intermittently instead of constantly.
A solid, dedicated surface — a proper equipment stand, a wall-mounted shelf bolted into a stud rather than just anchors, or a heavy sideboard — outperforms an elegant but thin shelf every time. If you're just starting a vinyl collection and buying furniture at the same time as your first deck, prioritise a stable, non-flexing surface over a stylish one; isolation feet or a slab of dense MDF/slate under the turntable can help further, but they're a refinement on top of a solid base, not a substitute for one.
Symptoms of a deck that is out
An unlevel turntable produces a specific, recognisable set of symptoms rather than a vague "worse sound."
