If you're three weeks into owning a turntable and something feels off, you don't need a beginner's buying guide — you need to match the symptom to the cause. Not Levelling the Deck

An unlevel turntable is the single most under-diagnosed setup fault, because the symptoms — a needle that drifts toward the label, uneven tracking pressure across the record, and skips that only happen on certain tracks — look like a dozen other problems. Most decks have adjustable feet and a small bubble or spirit level is enough to check all four corners; if you don't own one, a phone level app on the platter works in a pinch. Once level, the stylus sits in the groove with the weight the manufacturer intended, front to back and side to side.

Left unlevel, the effect compounds: tracking force effectively increases on one side of the record and decreases on the other, which is exactly the kind of uneven pressure that causes premature groove wear over months of listening. Tracking Force Set by Eye or Not at All

Tracking force is the downward pressure the stylus exerts on the record, set by the counterweight at the back of the tonearm, and it is not something to eyeball. Most cartridges specify a recommended range — commonly somewhere between 1.5g and 2.5g depending on the model — printed on the cartridge itself or in its datasheet. Setting it by feel, or leaving the counterweight wherever it arrived from the factory, is one of the most common mistakes we see reported after the first few weeks of ownership.

Tracking force too high crushes the groove walls, accelerating wear and dulling high-frequency detail permanently over repeated plays — this is one of the few setup mistakes that leaves lasting damage rather than just a bad sound in the moment. Transit Screws and the Stylus Guard

Many turntables, particularly belt-drive decks with a suspended sub-chassis, ship with transit screws locking the platter or arm assembly in place so nothing shifts in the box. Left in place, they restrict the exact movement the turntable needs to track a record properly, which shows up as uneven playback, arm drag, or — on some models — a noticeably quiet channel if the restricted movement affects how the cartridge sits in the groove. Check the underside of the platter and the manual's setup diagram before the first play; it's usually two or three screws, clearly marked.

The stylus guard is a separate, smaller mistake but a common one: the little plastic clip protecting the cantilever during shipping needs to come off before the first drop, not after. Playing a record with the guard still attached, or forgetting to remove it and then wondering why there's no sound at all, is one of the most frequently reported "why isn't this working" moments in week one. Neither mistake damages a record on its own, but a transit screw left in for weeks of regular play can put uneven stress on the suspension and, eventually, the cartridge.

Playing Second-Hand Records Unwashed

A modern LP is PVC — polyvinyl chloride with carbon black and stabilisers — and it tolerates cleaning very differently from a pre-1950s shellac 78, which is a completely different material. Isopropyl alcohol, a common go-to for cleaning electronics, will dissolve the surface of a shellac record rather than lift the dirt off it; on a PVC record it's generally safe in diluted cleaning solutions, but stronger solvents like acetone, xylene, and toluene — found in nail polish remover and some degreasers — attack PVC directly and will damage the playing surface permanently.

Buying second-hand without cleaning first is one of the fastest ways to introduce ground-in grit that then gets pressed into the groove by the stylus on every play, causing permanent noise that no later cleaning will remove. Sleeve and Storage Mistakes

Stacking records flat, even for a day, puts uneven weight across the stack and is one of the more common causes of warping reported by new collectors — and vinyl softens well below its actual melting point, so it doesn't take much sustained pressure or heat to deform a record permanently. The same goes for leaving records in a car, near a radiator, or in direct sun; the temperatures involved are enough to warp a disc in an afternoon.

  • Paper inner sleeves shed fibres over time and can scuff the surface on every insertion and removal — anti-static, poly-lined inner sleeves are the standard replacement and cost roughly $0.25–$0.50 each in bulk
  • Putting a record straight back in its sleeve right after play traps the static charge that built up during playback, which then attracts dust into the sleeve for next time
  • An LP in its sleeve is roughly 3mm thick, so 100 records occupy about 30cm of shelf run — store them vertically, not stacked, and not so tightly packed that pulling one out scrapes its neighbours

Wrong Input, Wrong Cable, No Earth

Turntable hum is almost always electrical, not mechanical, and it's usually one of three things: the turntable is plugged into a line-level input instead of a dedicated phono input, the ground/earth wire isn't connected to the amplifier's earth terminal, or the RCA cables are routed too close to a power cable or transformer. A phono input applies RIAA equalisation and the correct gain for a cartridge's tiny output signal; plug a turntable into an aux or line input without a separate preamp and you'll get a thin, quiet, distorted signal even before hum enters the picture.

The earth wire — a thin, separate wire from the RCA cables, often with a spade connector — exists specifically to prevent a ground loop, and skipping it is one of the most common reasons new owners report a persistent 60Hz-style hum that follows the volume knob. Check that your amp or receiver actually has a phono input; if it doesn't, you need an outboard phono preamp between the turntable and any line-level input, generally starting around $40–$80 for a basic unit.
