The short answer: by sound, not by the calendar

There's no single date or hour count that tells you a stylus is finished, because almost nobody actually tracks how many hours their turntable has played. Unlike a car's odometer, a stylus doesn't report its own mileage, so the honest answer to "when should I replace it" is: when it starts sounding different than it used to, not when a spreadsheet says so. That means the real skill worth building isn't memorising hour figures, it's learning to notice a slow drift in sound quality over weeks and months.

Manufacturer hour ratings are still worth knowing as a rough guide for budgeting a replacement, and they're covered in the next section. But treat them the way you'd treat a service interval on a bicycle chain — a sensible check-in point, not a hard deadline. If your stylus is well inside its rated hours but a familiar record suddenly sounds harsh, that's the signal that matters, not the number on the box it came in.

Quoted life by tip shape — and what it means in albums

Stylus life is usually quoted by tip profile, and the ranges are wide because they depend heavily on tracking force, alignment, and how clean your records are. As general guidance from cartridge manufacturers:

  • Spherical/conical tips (common on budget stock styli like the Audio-Technica AT-VM95C): typically quoted around 300–400 hours
  • Elliptical tips (AT-VM95E, Ortofon 2M Red): typically quoted around 400–600 hours
  • Advanced profiles — line-contact, microline, Shibata (AT-VM95ML, Ortofon 2M Bronze/Black): typically quoted 800–1,000+ hours

These figures mean little until you convert them into real listening. An LP side runs roughly 18–22 minutes, so a full album is roughly 40–45 minutes, call it 0.75 hours. A 500-hour stylus therefore lasts around 667 albums' worth of plays (500 ÷ 0.75). If you play five albums a week, that's about 133 weeks, or roughly two and a half years. If you're a heavier listener at one album a day, the same stylus is used up in under two years. Setup matters too — a tonearm running outside its recommended tracking force range will wear a stylus faster than these figures assume, sometimes considerably faster.

What a worn stylus actually sounds like

Wear shows up first in the treble and in sibilants — the "s" and "t" sounds in vocals start to spit, hiss, or distort in a way they didn't before. Cymbals and brass can take on a harsh, splashy edge, and loud orchestral or guitar peaks may develop an audible buzz or fuzz that wasn't there when the record was new to your system. Stereo imaging often collapses too: instruments that used to sit clearly left, right, and centre start to blur together, and the sense of depth flattens out.

The most useful test is comparison, not isolated listening. Play a track you know intimately — one you've heard on this system dozens of times — and listen specifically for changes versus your memory of it. Before assuming the worst, rule out the obvious: a dirty stylus can mimic wear symptoms almost exactly, so it's worth learning how to clean a record player needle properly and re-testing before you spend money on a replacement. If the harshness persists across multiple clean records after a proper cleaning, wear is the more likely explanation.

What a worn stylus does to your records

This is the part that makes the timing decision urgent rather than optional: a worn stylus does permanent, physical harm to every record it plays. A modern LP is PVC — polyvinyl chloride with carbon black and stabilisers — and the groove wall is a soft, precisely cut surface. As a stylus tip wears, its contact area changes shape and starts making contact with the groove wall at the wrong angle and with uneven pressure, effectively re-cutting and flattening fine groove detail with every pass. Once that detail is gone, a new stylus fitted afterward cannot restore it — the damage is baked into that specific copy forever.

This applies regardless of pressing weight; a 180g vinyl pressing is no more resistant to this kind of wear than a standard 120g copy, since the groove itself is identical in both. It's also why a record's condition can slide fast: a copy that graded VG+ under the standard vinyl grading conventions can be knocked down to VG or worse after just a handful of plays on a tired stylus. Looking at it: what you can and can't see

Visual inspection has a real place in diagnosis, but it has hard limits that most advice glosses over. The stylus contact area that actually touches the groove wall is only a few microns across — smaller than a human red blood cell. A phone's macro lens, even a good one, typically resolves details in the tens-of-microns range at best, which means it can show you a stylus that's obviously chipped, bent, or caked in debris, but it cannot reliably show you the gradual rounding that constitutes ordinary wear.

A jeweler's loupe (10x–30x) or a cheap USB microscope gets you closer, and both are worth owning if you're serious about your setup, but even these are better at ruling out gross damage than confirming fine wear. What a macro shot commonly shows instead is a small tuft of lint or dust wedged against the cantilever, which can look alarming and mimic wear symptoms in sound, but is fixed by cleaning rather than replacement. Treat any visual check as a way to catch obvious damage — never as a definitive pass or fail on wear.

Wear versus damage: not the same problem

Wear is gradual — the tip slowly rounds off over hundreds of hours of normal use. Damage is sudden — a dropped tonearm, a knocked headshell, a cartridge packed carelessly for shipping, or a stylus guard left off in a bag. These need to be treated differently, because damage doesn't wait for an hour count and often shows up as a dramatic, immediate symptom rather than a slow drift.

A bent cantilever is the classic example. Look at the stylus assembly from the front and the side: the thin metal or boron rod holding the diamond should sit straight and perpendicular to the headshell. If it's visibly angled, kinked, or the diamond sits off-centre, that's damage, not ordinary wear, and it typically causes obvious symptoms — one channel dramatically quieter than the other, a persistent buzz, or complete mistracking even at correct tracking force settings. A chipped or missing diamond tip is similar: sudden, often audible as a harsh scraping sound from the first play. Neither of these improves with cleaning or time, and both call for replacement regardless of how many hours the stylus has on it.

Stylus replacement or whole cartridge replacement?

Whether you can replace just the stylus or need a whole new cartridge depends on the cartridge type. Most moving magnet (MM) cartridges — the Audio-Technica AT-VM95 series and Ortofon 2M series are the most common examples on decks people actually own — use a user-replaceable stylus assembly that clips or unscrews off the cartridge body. Swapping it is a five-minute job and typically costs $30–$70 depending on tip profile, without touching alignment or tracking force settings significantly.

Moving coil (MC) cartridges are usually built as one sealed unit, with the coils wound around the cantilever itself rather than housed separately. There's no user-replaceable stylus on most MC designs; wear means either sending the cartridge to a specialist for a professional re-tip, or buying a new cartridge outright, and either route commonly runs $150–$500+ depending on the model. There's a middle case worth knowing too: even on an MM cartridge, the rubber suspension damper that holds the cantilever ages independently of the diamond tip. If sound has gone dull or uneven across the whole frequency range rather than specifically harsh on peaks, and a fresh stylus doesn't fix it, the cartridge body itself — not just the tip — may be the part that's worn out.

Symptom table: is it the stylus, the record, or the groove?

The same complaint — "my records sound crackly and harsh" — has at least three different causes, and they call for three different fixes. Confusing them is the single most common reason people replace a perfectly good stylus, or ignore one that genuinely needs replacing.
