Gravity pulls the stylus slightly off its intended path when the plinth is tilted, and that's often enough to lift it out of a groove it would otherwise track cleanly. Footfall, vibration and where the deck stands
Turntables are mechanically simple and mechanically sensitive at the same time — the stylus is tracking movements measured in microns, so any vibration reaching the plinth from outside the record can be enough to bounce it out of the groove. Footfall on a suspended wooden floor, a shared shelf with loudspeakers, a rack that flexes when someone walks past, or a subwoofer sitting on the same surface as the deck are all common, and often overlooked, causes of skipping that have nothing to do with the record or the tonearm settings.
