The Short Answer: Crackle Often Cleans Out, Hiss and Wear Do Not
The single most useful thing to know before you touch a bottle of cleaning fluid is that "noise" on a record is not one problem — it's several different problems that happen to sound similar to an untrained ear. Crackle, in the strict sense collectors use, refers to light, irregular ticking that comes from something sitting on top of the vinyl: dust, dried fingerprint oil, mold-release residue from pressing, or a static charge attracting debris mid-play. That kind of noise is genuinely mechanical — it's debris in the groove interfering with the stylus — and a correct wet clean or ultrasonic clean typically removes most or all of it.
Hiss, and the deeper wash of noise that rises in quiet passages, is a different animal entirely. That's usually the sound of groove wear: the vinyl walls themselves have been eroded by a stylus, and no cleaning fluid can put worn material back. The Noises and What Each One Is
Collectors and dealers use fairly specific vocabulary for record noise, and it's worth learning because it maps directly to cause. Crackle is a rapid, irregular series of very light ticks, usually most audible in quiet passages, and is almost always surface contamination or static. Pops are louder, isolated, single events — a scratch, a deep gouge, or a manufacturing non-fill will produce a pop rather than a crackle. Ticks that repeat at a regular interval, once per rotation, point to something physical and localized: a scuff, a pressing flaw, or occasionally a warp interacting with the stylus.

What Cleaning Actually Removes
A correctly done wet clean — fluid, a soft brush worked along the groove direction, and either vacuum extraction or air drying — lifts dust, skin oils, dried fingerprints, smoke residue, and the release compound left over from pressing. This is genuinely the majority of noise on most secondhand records, which is why so many collectors report a dramatic improvement after a first deep clean, and why a proper cleaning routine is usually the first thing worth trying before assuming a record is damaged. What it never touches is anything that has changed the physical shape of the groove: scratches, gouges, worn groove walls, or a deformed record. Groove Wear: What It Sounds Like and Why It's Permanent
Groove wear happens when a stylus — especially a worn or misaligned one, or one running at too much tracking force — physically abrades the groove walls over repeated plays. The groove wear sound is distinctive once you know it: a soft, hissy wash that's most obvious in quiet intros, run-out grooves, and between tracks, and that gets partially masked once the music is loud enough to cover it. Unlike crackle, it doesn't respond to cleaning at all, because there's no debris to remove — the vinyl itself has lost material.
This is different from a scratch, which is a localized, visible gouge you can usually see and often feel with a fingernail; groove wear is generalized and often invisible even under good light. Pulling a record out of a paper inner sleeve generates a triboelectric charge, and so does the stylus dragging through the groove during play — both of which pull airborne dust onto the surface and can also produce their own crackle and pop sounds as the charge discharges. That's why a record can sound noisy again within days of a thorough clean, even in a clean room: the charge, not the dirt, is the recurring problem.

Noise That Was Pressed In
Not every noisy record has been played or mishandled — some noise is baked in at the factory. During the pressing process, trapped air can create tiny pits called non-fill, the vinyl compound can carry contamination from recycled material, and uneven cooling can leave a warp that makes the stylus ride unevenly through the groove. Any of these will produce crackle, ticks, or hiss on a record that has never been played before you.
