What goes wrong

From the troubleshooting section on page 8 of the Debut Carbon EVO manual.

SymptomCauseWhat to doManual
The platter doesn't turn, though the deck is switched on. Not connected to the mains, no power at the socket, or the drive belt is not fitted or has slipped off. Connect the power; refit the belt. Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 8
No signal on one or both channels. A broken contact anywhere from cartridge to amplifier; phono input not selected; amplifier off, muted or faulty; speakers not connected. Check each connection and the amplifier settings. Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 8
Strong hum on the phono input. No earth connection from the arm or arm cable to the amplifier, or an earth loop. Connect the earth wire to the amplifier's earth terminal (p. 5). Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 8
Distorted or uneven sound on one or both channels. Wrong amplifier input or MM/MC setting; damaged stylus or cantilever; wrong speed; belt overstretched or dirty; platter bearing dry or dirty. Use an MM phono input (47 kΩ); check the stylus, the speed and the belt. Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 8

Set up the Debut Carbon EVO

The setup from Pro-Ject's manual and setup guide, step by step on the model. Play these steps on the 3D model →

  1. Level the deck. Put the deck on a level surface, check it with a spirit level, and turn the adjustable feet if it leans. Why: A tilted deck pulls the arm to one side of the groove. Tip: Check on the platter once it is fitted. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 4
  2. Remove the transport lock. Remove the transport lock from the arm rest and keep it for moving the deck. Why: It holds the arm still in the box. Tip: Refit it whenever you move the deck. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 4
  3. Fit the belt. Fit the flat belt round the subplatter and the smaller step of the motor pulley. Keep it free of grease. Why: The larger step is for the round belt and 78 rpm. Tip: Clean, dry fingers only. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 4
  4. Platter and mat. Lower the platter over the spindle, then lay the felt mat on it. Why: The steel platter's mass keeps the speed steady. Tip: Lower it gently onto the bearing; don't drop it. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 4
  5. Balance the arm. Push the counterweight onto the rear of the arm, scale facing the front. Lower the lift, take off the stylus guard and turn the counterweight until the arm floats level. Why: A floating arm is the zero point the force is measured from. Tip: Keep the stylus between the rest and the platter while it floats. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 4
  6. Set the tracking force. With the arm on its rest, hold the weight and turn only the scale ring to 0. Then turn the whole weight anticlockwise (seen from the front) to the force for your cartridge: 17.5 mN for the 2M Red, 20 mN for the Rainier. Why: Pro-Ject sets the force before the anti-skate, because the anti-skate groove depends on it. Tip: The setup guide says 18–20 on the scale for both versions. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 4-5
  7. Hang the anti-skate weight. Hang the thread loop of the anti-skate weight in the second groove of the stub (right for the fitted cartridge) and run the thread through the wire support. Why: The weight balances the pull toward the centre so both groove walls wear evenly. Tip: Third groove for 20 mN and up, first for 10–14 mN. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 5
  8. Connect it. Connect the RCA outputs to the amplifier's phono (MM, 47 kΩ) input and the earth wire to its earth terminal. Plug the power supply into the deck before the mains. Why: There is no preamp in the deck; without the earth wire it hums. Tip: Fit the right plug adapter to the power supply first. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 5
  9. Fit the lid, choose the speed. Fit the lid over the hinge prongs and adjust the screws so it stays open. Use the switch under the front-left edge: left for 33, right for 45. Why: For 78s, swap to the round belt on the larger pulley step and switch right. Tip: The centre position is off. From: Debut Carbon EVO instructions (2020), p. 5

Align the cartridge on the Debut Carbon EVO

The Debut Carbon EVO's manual gives 218.5 mm effective length and 18.5 mm overhang, which puts the tonearm pivot 200 mm from the spindle. Our free cartridge alignment protractor draws an arc protractor for exactly that arm and prints it at true size.
