The platter does not turn. AC adaptor not connected; belt not hooked on the motor pulley. Connect the adaptor firmly to the outlet and DC IN 12V; hook the belt fully round the motor pulley (p. 12). PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 24

You hear noise. OUTPUT SELECT on PHONO into a non-phono input; a computer connected by USB during playback. Use LINE for non-phono inputs (never LINE into a PHONO input); disconnect the USB computer. PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 23

Set up the PS-LX310BT

The setup from Sony's manual, step by step on the model. Play these steps on the 3D model →

  1. Choose the spot. Keep the stylus cover on and the adaptor unplugged. Put the turntable on a level surface, away from speakers, TVs and direct sun. Why: Speaker vibration reaching the stylus is the rumbling and howling in the troubleshooting table. Tip: Leave the power unplugged until assembly is finished. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 11
  2. Place the platter. Lower the platter, with the belt already wound on its underside, level onto the spindle. Why: The belt runs on the inside rim of the platter, so it goes on with it. Tip: Turn the platter until the motor pulley and the red ribbon show through the rectangular hole. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 11
  3. Hook the belt on the pulley. Peel off the tape, pull the red ribbon and hook the belt round the motor pulley without twisting or overstretching it. Then remove the ribbon. Why: With the belt off the pulley, the platter does not turn. Tip: Clean, dry fingers: oil makes a belt slip. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 12
  4. Lay the mat. Put the mat on the platter. Why: It grips the record and damps the metal platter. Tip: Brush it now and then so dust stays off your records. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 12
  5. Reset the mechanism. Remove the transport string on the arm. Press UP/DOWN to raise the arm, turn the platter clockwise by hand ten times, then press UP/DOWN again to lower it. Why: This initialises the automatic mechanism; Sony repeats it as the fix when the platter will not turn. Tip: Turn the platter, not the arm. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 12
  6. Fit the dust cover. Push the two hinges into the dust cover, then into the hinge pockets at the back. Why: The cover lifts off upward whenever you want it off. Tip: Keep it closed between plays to keep dust off the stylus. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 12
  7. Connect and set OUTPUT SELECT. With the amplifier off, plug the turntable's attached cable into it: white to L, red to R. Set OUTPUT SELECT to PHONO for a phono input, LINE for AUX or other line inputs. Why: The switch turns the built-in preamp on (LINE) or off (PHONO). The wrong one is too quiet or distorted. Tip: For Bluetooth only, set LINE and keep the plugs from touching metal. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 13
  8. Plug in the power. Connect the AC adaptor, keeping the adaptor itself as far from the turntable as you can. Why: Sony asks for the adaptor body to sit away from the turntable. Tip: Optional Bluetooth: hold BLUETOOTH/PAIRING for about 2 seconds and put the speaker or headphones in pairing mode. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 14
  9. Play a record. Put a record on (the 45 adapter for 7-inch singles), set the SPEED and SIZE knobs, take off the stylus cover and press START. Set the volume on your amplifier or speaker. Why: The SIZE knob tells the arm where the record begins. Tip: UP/DOWN pauses; STOP returns the arm. From: PS-LX310BT operating instructions (Asia, Americas), p. 16

Does the PS-LX310BT need a protractor?

No. The PS-LX310BT has no step for mounting or aligning a cartridge: the factory sets where the stylus sits. An alignment protractor is for turntables where you fit the cartridge yourself.
