Technics SL-1200 parts, in 3D

Take the SL-1200 apart in 3D: a direct-drive DJ deck with no belt to wear out. Part numbers, specs and setup on this page come from the SL-1200MK7 owner's manual.

3D model made by VinylAI from the layout drawings in the maker's manual. Proportions are approximate; no logos are shown.

Replacement parts

The SL-1200MK7 ships without a cartridge, so there is no stylus code for the deck itself: the stylus is whatever your cartridge maker names. Part numbers below are from the accessories list in the manual, which notes they are "as of February 2019, subject to change".

What goes wrong

SymptomCauseWhat to doManual
No power. The mains lead is not plugged in. Plug the mains lead in firmly. SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 22
Power, but no sound or weak sound. Not connected to the amplifier's PHONO input. Connect the PHONO cables to the PHONO input of the amplifier or mixer. SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 22
Left and right are swapped. Stereo cable reversed at the amplifier, or headshell leads on the wrong cartridge pins. Check all connections. SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 22
Hum during play. Other appliances or their power leads near the stereo cable; earth lead not connected. Move them away from the deck and connect the earth lead. SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 22
The 33 or 45 light blinks. Not stated; it also happens if START-STOP is pressed with the platter off. Switch off, unplug, wait 3 seconds, plug back in, switch on and press START-STOP. If it blinks again, contact service. SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 22

Set up the SL-1200

The setup from the SL-1200MK7 manual, step by step on the model. Play these steps on the 3D model →

  1. Mount the cartridge. Mount your cartridge (bought separately) on the supplied headshell. Connect the leads: red to R+, green to R−, white to L+, blue to L−. Tighten the screws lightly. Why: A lead on the wrong pin swaps the channels or drops one. Tip: Leave the stylus guard on until the last step. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 9
  2. Set the overhang. Slide the cartridge until the stylus tip is 52 mm from the mounting end of the headshell, then tighten the screws. Why: The overhang sets the angle of the stylus to the groove across the whole side. Tip: Measure along the headshell, not at an angle. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 9
  3. Fit the headshell to the arm. Push the headshell onto the end of the arm, hold it level and tighten the locking nut. Why: A loose headshell rocks and loses contact on one channel. Tip: Spare headshells with other cartridges swap on the same way. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 9
  4. Lower the platter. Take the magnet cover off the underside of the platter, then lower the platter slowly onto the centre spindle. Do not touch the three screws underneath. Why: The magnet on the underside sits right over the motor; the manual has the cover off before the platter goes on. Tip: Lower it slowly. It is heavy, and the spindle carries all of it. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 11
  5. Slipmat and slip sheet. Lay the slipmat, printed side up, and the slip sheet on the platter, as the manual shows. Why: The slipmat lets a DJ hold the record still while the platter keeps turning. Tip: Brush the slipmat now and then: felt holds dust. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 11
  6. Fit the balance weight. Screw the balance weight onto the rear of the tonearm. Why: The weight balances the arm and then sets the tracking force. Tip: Hold the arm so it cannot swing while you fit it. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 11
  7. Connect it. Connect the PHONO cable and the PHONO earth lead to a PHONO input on the amplifier or mixer. Connect the mains lead last. Why: There is no preamp in the deck. Into a normal line input it sounds quiet and thin. Tip: The earth lead stops hum. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 12
  8. Level it with the insulators. Put the deck on a level, vibration-free surface. Turn the insulator feet to level it: clockwise lowers that corner. Why: A tilted deck pulls the arm to one side of the groove. Tip: A sturdy stand keeps a club's bass out of the stylus. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 13
  9. Balance the arm. Set anti-skate to 0 and lower the cue lever. Turn the balance weight until the arm floats level. Why: A floating arm is the zero point the force is measured from. Tip: Keep the stylus off the platter while the arm floats. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 14
  10. Set the stylus pressure. Hold the weight and turn only the pressure ring to 0. Then turn the whole weight until the ring reads your cartridge's recommended force. Why: Technics leaves the figure to the cartridge maker: the arm takes 0 to 4 g. Tip: The figure is in your cartridge's or stylus's own guide. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 14-15
  11. Set anti-skate. Turn the anti-skate dial to the same value as the stylus pressure. For 3 g or more, set it to 3. Why: It balances the pull toward the centre so both groove walls wear evenly. Tip: Check it again whenever you change the force. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 15
  12. Play a record. Turn the power on (33 rpm is selected), press START-STOP, raise the cue lever, move the arm over the record and lower the lever. Why: Direct drive is up to speed almost at once. Tip: Press RESET to lock the speed to exactly 33 or 45, whatever the pitch fader says. Take the dust cover off while you play. From: SL-1200MK7 owner's manual (TQBM0410, North America), p. 18-19

Optional steps from the manual are not on the model: arm height (p. 16), cue-lever height (p. 17) and the DIP switches for 78 rpm, reverse play, torque and brake (p. 17).

Align the cartridge on the SL-1200

The SL-1200's manual gives 230 mm effective length and 15 mm overhang, which puts the tonearm pivot 215 mm from the spindle. Our free cartridge alignment protractor draws an arc protractor for exactly that arm and prints it at true size.

Questions about the SL-1200

No. The accessories list has a headshell (TYL0331) but no cartridge, and the setup starts with "attach a cartridge (store-bought)" (manual pages 7 and 9).
Whatever your cartridge maker names for the cartridge you fitted. Technics suggests a DJ cartridge and stylus for scratching, and leaves the tracking force to the cartridge maker (pages 9 and 14).
No. It is direct drive: the platter sits on the motor itself, so there is no belt to replace.
Yes, once DIP switch 4 under the deck is turned on (with the deck switched off and unplugged). Then pressing 33 and 45 together selects 78 (pages 17 and 19).
Yes. The MK7 has a PHONO output only. Technics warns that an amplifier without PHONO input terminals will not give adequate volume or sound quality (page 12).
Technics' own series history says the RESET button arrived on the SL-1200LTD in 1995 and the headshell stand on the MK3D in 1997, so an MK2 has neither. Technics publishes no MK2 specifications online, so we do not compare numbers.
