About this record

Stamped in the dead wax with the matrix PL 84862-1 and PL 84862-2, this European RCA pressing of the Hammersmith Odeon concert was manufactured by Sonopress in Germany in 1983—a full decade after the July 1973 performance. The 1983 European edition differs from its Canadian counterpart (RCA CPL2-4862), and demand remains steady: 599 collectors want it against 3295 who own one, with 78 copies currently listed for sale.

What drives its value

Condition drives the entire market for this pressing. A Mint copy commands 79.64 USD, while the same record in NM grade drops to 71.26 USD—a sharp divide that reflects the fragility of the gatefold sleeve and the sensitivity of Sonopress pressings to handling.

VG+ copies stabilize at 54.49 USD, and the floor for a playable VG example is 37.73 USD. The lowest asking price across the 78 active listings is 11.76 USD, typically representing heavily played or damaged stock.

The European pressing holds value above the Canadian variant due to its Sonopress plant attribution and the specific runout matrix stamps (PL 84862-1 and PL 84862-2), which collectors verify against bootlegs. The double-pocket gatefold and the presence or absence of a Hype sticker add further grading nuance, making condition assessment the primary price determinant.

How to appraise this pressing

Confirm this pressing by the catalogue number PL 84862(2) on the spine and label, and verify the Sonopress plant credit in the dead wax. The stamped runouts read PL 84862-1 on Side 1 and PL 84862-2 on Side 2; the secondary matrix stamps B-0532 A-1/83 S III and B-0532 B-1/83 S III appear on the same sides and confirm the 1983 German pressing.

The release notes specify that runouts are stamped except for the second II and III in certain variants, which are etched—use this detail to distinguish pressings. The sleeve is double-pocket gatefold; check for the Hype sticker (present on some copies, absent on others) and inspect the gate for splits, the pockets for seam wear, and the vinyl for hairline scratches under light.

The label should read Made in Germany and Printed in W. Germany.

All 15 tracks are present; verify the track order matches the release notes, which note a different arrangement of Side 1 titles above the publishing box.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between the 1983 European and Canadian pressings?

Both were released in 1983 on RCA, but the European edition (PL 84862(2)) was pressed by Sonopress in Germany with the stamped matrix PL 84862-1 and PL 84862-2, while the Canadian pressing carries the catalogue number CPL2-4862. The European version is the one most commonly listed for sale and is the focus of this price guide.

What is a VG+ copy of this pressing worth?

According to the price guide, a VG+ copy is valued at 54.49 USD. This represents a record with light surface noise, minimal groove wear, and a gatefold sleeve with only minor creasing or edge wear—no seam splits or major handling damage.

Why does condition matter so much for this record?

The Sonopress pressing is known to be sensitive to surface marks and dust, and the double-pocket gatefold sleeve is prone to seam splitting and pocket wear with age. The jump from Mint (79.64 USD) to NM (71.26 USD) shows how even light handling reduces value. A VG copy drops to 37.73 USD—more than half the Mint price—because wear becomes audible and visible.

Does the Hype sticker affect the value of this pressing?

The release notes confirm that some copies came with a Hype sticker and some without. While the price guide does not differentiate by sticker presence, collectors typically view an intact, legible sticker as a marker of lower handling and thus better condition. A sticker in poor condition or missing from the sleeve may indicate heavier play.

How do I verify I have the correct pressing?

Check the catalogue number PL 84862(2) on the spine. Look at the dead wax for the stamped matrix PL 84862-1 (Side 1) and PL 84862-2 (Side 2), followed by the secondary stamps B-0532 A-1/83 S III and B-0532 B-1/83 S III. The label should credit Sonopress and read Made in Germany / Printed in W. Germany. The gatefold must be double-pocket, and the track order on Side 1 should have all titles above the publishing box.
