About this record

The UK first pressing of The Wall carries catalogue number SHDW 411 across its gatefold, but the dead-wax matrix stamps reveal three distinct pressing plants: EMI Records Ltd., Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd., and EMI Records, each contributing to the 26-track stereo album. Release notes from a 2023 resubmission clarify that the original 1st issue (ID 2041618) was incorrectly merged with a 2nd pressing (ID 367511), making verification of your copy's true generation critical.

The cream-coloured Wall and misaligned bricks on the front cover distinguish this 1979 Harvest pressing from later reprints and the simultaneous 1979 Columbia US edition (PC2 36183) and Netherlands Harvest pressing (1A 158-63410).

What drives its value

A Mint copy of this UK first pressing commands 199.29 USD, while NM drops to 178.31 USD and VG+ settles at 136.36 USD—a steep decline that reflects the pressing's sensitivity to handling and storage. The market snapshot shows 85 copies currently for sale, with the lowest asking price at 23.56 USD, indicating a wide spread between dealer-graded stock and collector-held examples.

Community demand is substantial: 3339 collectors want this pressing against 5830 who own one, a ratio that underscores its iconic status but also its relative availability. The 1979 UK Harvest pressing (SHDW 411) commands higher prices than the simultaneous US Columbia (PC2 36183) and Canadian Columbia editions, as UK first pressings typically hold stronger collector premiums.

Condition grade directly determines value: VG copies fetch 94.40 USD, G+ copies 52.45 USD, and heavily played copies drop to 31.47 USD or lower, making this pressing's original sleeve condition (the cream Wall, the plastic sticker, the Gerald Scarfe inner-sleeve graphics) as critical as the vinyl itself.

How to appraise this pressing

Confirm this is the 1979 UK first pressing by checking the front cover for the cream-coloured (not pure white) Wall with bricks that do not align flush to the bottom edge—a hallmark of the first issue that was corrected in reprints. The gatefold spine and back cover must show catalogue number SHDW 411; the two vinyl discs are stamped SHSP 4111 (side A and B) and SHSP 4112 (side C and D) in the dead wax.

Inspect the inner lyric sleeves (thick card with rounded corners and a nine-inch thumb notch): first-pressing variants either list only the specific disc's catalogue number in the lower right, or list three numbers—SHDW 411, OC-158 63410, and SHSP 4111 (or SHSP 4112 for the second inner). The gatefold itself exists in two variants: a single wrap-around sheet with seam at the top, or two heavy-cardboard sheets with seams at top and bottom.

No barcode appears on the back cover. The plastic sticker on the front should be loose or partially adhered, not permanently glued.

Grade by examining the vinyl surface under light for hairline scratches and the sleeve for creasing, ring wear, and sticker condition; a Mint copy shows no signs of play, while VG+ copies display light surface marks and minor sleeve wear.

Release notes

1st pressing with picture labels in gatefold sleeve with plastic sticker that adheres to the sleeve, but is not permantly stuck on. Special note: This is a new 2023 submission of the 1st UK issue. The original 1st issue (ID 2041618) was incorrectly merged with (ID 367511) which is most likely the 2nd issue. So check your copy again please.

Inner sleeves also feature the "Wall" design with lyrics (graphics by Gerald Scarfe).

The track order on the inners is not the same as featured on the album.

Specific to the first issue sleeve:

Band members are not listed on the inside cover. It only says "Words and Music - Roger Waters. Except..." and "Produced By David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, Roger Waters". Re-pressings added band member credits and had other minor alterations.

No bar code on the back cover.

The Wall is cream coloured, not true white. The bricks on the front cover are not aligned right to the bottom of the cover on the outside or inside.

There are two 1st pressing sleeve variants:

1. A single sheet of wrap-around cardboard with the seam across the inner top edge of the cover. 2. Two sheets of cardboard, with seams at the top and bottom of the cover. Cardboard is heavy thickness.

There are two 1st pressing lyric inner sleeve variants (Both are on thick card with rounded corners and a nine-inch thumb notch at the top):

1. Sides 2 and 4 have the catalog number of the specific record listed on a single line in the lower right corner. 2. Sides 2 and 4 have the catalog number (SHDW 411), international catalogue number (OC-158 63410), and the UK catalogue number (SHSP 4111) in the lower right corner.

Mastered at The Mastering Lab (Los Angeles, CA, USA).

Recorded at Superbear (Miravel, France), Producers Workshop (Los Angeles, CA, USA) & C.B.S. (New York, NY, USA) between April and November 1979.

Frequently asked

What is the catalogue number for the 1979 UK first pressing?

The album catalogue number is SHDW 411. The two discs are numbered SHSP 4111 and SHSP 4112 respectively, and the inner sleeves carry international catalogue numbers OC-158 63410 and OC-158 63411. These numbers are stamped in the dead wax and printed on the inner sleeves.

How much is a VG+ copy worth?

According to the price guide, a VG+ copy is valued at 136.36 USD. This represents a significant drop from the 178.31 USD for NM copies, reflecting how sensitive this pressing is to even light play and storage conditions. The lowest asking price across 85 active listings is 23.56 USD, but that typically represents heavily played or damaged stock.

What distinguishes the UK first pressing from the 1979 US and Netherlands editions?

The UK Harvest pressing (SHDW 411) features a cream-coloured Wall with misaligned bricks on the gatefold—a design flaw corrected in later pressings. The simultaneous 1979 US Columbia edition carries catalogue number PC2 36183, while the 1979 Netherlands Harvest pressing is numbered 1A 158-63410. The UK first pressing also omits band member credits on the inside cover, listing only Roger Waters as writer and the three producers (David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, Roger Waters).

What is the lowest price I should expect to pay for any copy?

The lowest asking price currently listed is 23.56 USD, though this typically represents a heavily played or damaged copy. A Good (G) copy is estimated at 31.47 USD, Fair (F) at 20.98 USD, and Poor (P) at 10.49 USD. Most collectors seeking a playable copy should budget for at least VG grade (94.40 USD) to avoid surface noise.

How many people collect this pressing and how rare is it?

Community data shows 5830 collectors own this pressing and 3339 want one, indicating strong demand relative to supply. With 85 copies currently for sale, the pressing is not scarce, but the 2023 resubmission clarified that the original 1st issue (ID 2041618) was incorrectly merged with a 2nd pressing (ID 367511), so verifying your copy's generation is essential before selling or trading.
