About this record
The original UK pressing of Queen's Jazz is identified by its hand-etched runouts including YAX-5550-1U OA RTB-2 STERLING 6 and YAX-5551-1U RM RTB-1 STERLING 3. This 1978 EMI Records UK release carries the catalogue number EMA 788(I) on the inner sleeve and features a gatefold cover with an embossed Jazz title on both front and back.
A unique collector's detail is the attached Bicycle Race poster, which is perforated for removal and measures approximately 284mm by 428mm. The glossy laminated inner sleeve with rounded corners also helps confirm this pressing.
What drives its value
Price variation for this UK pressing ranges from 208.43 USD in Mint condition down to 10.97 USD in Poor condition. A VG+ copy is valued at 142.61 USD, while a VG copy trades around 98.73 USD.
The market currently lists 206 copies for sale with the lowest price at 10.95 USD. Demand is strong, with 3925 collectors wanting it, compared to 12667 who own a copy.
This pressing is the original UK issue, which typically commands higher prices than other 1978 EMI pressings from the Netherlands (cat no. 5C 062-61820), Germany (1C 064-61 820), or the US Elektra releases (6E-166).
How to appraise this pressing
To confirm this exact UK EMI pressing of Jazz, verify the catalogue number EMA 788 or EMA 788(I) on the inner sleeve and gatefold cover. Check for the hand-etched matrix runouts YAX-5550 and YAX-5551, which include the stamped 'STERLING' and EMI stamper codes like GRAMOPHLTD.
The presence of the embossed Jazz title on the gatefold and the original Bicycle Race poster, attached along the inner back gatefold edge, are key identifiers. Grading should consider the condition of the laminated inner sleeve and the poster’s perforations, as well as surface quality, since prices range from 208.43 USD for Mint down to 10.97 USD for Poor condition.

Release notes
The original LP was released in a gatefold cover with a poster of "Bicycle Race", a bunch of naked women on bicycles. Includes also a glossy laminated printed inner sleeve. The "Jazz" name on both front and back are embossed.
Catalogue number EMA 788 (I) is stated on the inner sleeve.
It should be made clear that the poster was attached to the inner back gatefold (right edge). This back edge was sealed and the disc would be in the front gatefold. The poster could be viewed, still attached, by carefully folding out the poster. However it could be detached (permanently) by tearing the perforations.. Those that are loose have been separated from the sleeve in this way. The black and white inner sleeve is a thin very glossy card with rounded corners.
May also contain an additional portraits / lyrics poster (284mm x 428mm) [see photos]
