Why April 17, 2027 is the likely date

Record Store Day is "usually held on the third Saturday in April", in the organisers' own words, and the third Saturday of April 2027 is April 17. The usual reason for moving it is Easter: when the third Saturday has fallen on Easter weekend, the event has run a week earlier or later — in 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2025, with 2014 the exception. Easter 2027 is on March 28, so there is no clash. Record Store Day Sweden's official site already gives April 17, 2027 as its date.

The dates are not completely predictable, though: 2023 was moved from the third to the fourth Saturday with no Easter reason. Until the official announcement, treat April 17 as the date to plan around, not to book travel on.

YearThird Saturday of AprilEaster SundayLikely date

2029April 21April 1April 21

Calendar sites that simply print the third Saturday list April 15, 2028 — Easter Saturday — which on past form is unlikely to be the date.

What happens between now and Record Store Day 2027

  1. October 2026: the RSD Black Friday list. In 2025 it was published on October 2.
  2. Friday, November 27, 2026: RSD Black Friday, the November edition with a shorter list.
  3. December 1, 2026: the US application deadline for new shops; UK shop registration opens.
  4. Early January 2027: the official date announcement.
  5. Late January to February 2027: the ambassadors — US and global first, then national ones.
  6. Early February 2027: the official release list, US and UK on the same day, then the national lists. Titles keep being added afterwards: in 2026 the Taylor Swift 7-inch was announced on March 2, four weeks after the list.
  7. March to April 2027: shops publish their in-store events and how they will run the morning.
  8. Saturday, April 17, 2027 (expected): Record Store Day, in person only.
  9. The days after: leftovers go online — in the US from Sunday morning, in the UK from Monday evening.

How to get ready for Record Store Day 2027

  • Find your shops now. Not every independent shop takes part. Use the official locator for your country once it updates, and our directory of record shops by city to choose a first, second and third shop.
  • Learn the rules where you live. No pre-orders or reservations anywhere; one copy per title in the UK and Spain; online sales of leftovers at different times in each country. They are all on the Record Store Day overview.
  • Set a budget before the list comes out. At one UK shop in 2026, multi-LP sets were priced from £59.99 to £88.99 and a 7-inch single at £19.99.
  • Know which releases hold their value. Most do not: the median 2026 release was asking $20.46 on Discogs five and a half months later. The few that rise are the ones with long want lists — the numbers are on the Record Store Day 2026 page.
  • Use Black Friday as a rehearsal. The same rules, a shorter list and smaller queues.

The 20th Record Store Day

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 by independent record shop owners and staff meeting in Baltimore, and the first was held on April 19, 2008, with nearly 100 US shops and fewer than 20 exclusive releases. By 2026 it had grown to more than 350 releases in the US and 500 in the UK, and to more than 3,000 shops in 23 countries. RSD UK has already said that 2027 will mark the 20th anniversary; how it will be marked has not been announced. The full history, with every date and ambassador since 2008, is on the Record Store Day overview.
