Mold doesn't just sit on a jacket, it roots into the fibres and feeds on the adhesive that holds the laminate down. Is it mould? Telling it from residue and haze
Not everything that looks bad on a record is mold. True mold usually shows as raised, fuzzy or fibrous patches — grey, white, green, or black — that have texture you can feel with a fingernail, and it's very often accompanied by a musty, damp smell that clings to both the vinyl and the sleeve. It tends to follow the shape of moisture exposure: heavier near the edge of the jacket, in the seams, or wherever the box sat against a damp floor.

Why you must not dry brush a mouldy record first

The correct order is the opposite: wet the surface first. A cleaning fluid — whether a dedicated enzymatic mold-and-mildew formula or a standard record cleaning fluid — encapsulates the spores in liquid before anything mechanical touches them, so brushing or wiping afterward removes them instead of grinding them in. Cleaning the disc
Once the surface is wet, work in one direction, following the groove rather than across it, using a soft microfibre or dedicated cleaning pad rather than the brush you'd normally reach for first. - Avoid acetone, xylene, toluene, and most household degreasers or nail polish removers — these are strong solvents that attack PVC directly and can cause permanent damage far worse than the mold.
- Dry with a clean, lint-free cloth immediately; residual moisture left on vinyl is exactly the condition that let mold grow in the first place.

The jacket: cleaning, replacing, and when to bin it
A moldy record jacket is the part collectors most often try and fail to save. If the mold is limited to light surface spotting on a laminated cover, a barely damp cloth with a little mild soap, wiped gently and dried immediately in open air, can sometimes lift it without damaging the print. Uncoated cardboard is much less forgiving — any moisture at all can cause the surface fibres to lift, so cleaning is rarely worth the risk once mold has actually taken hold rather than just brushed the surface.

When mold shows up, it's almost never on one record — it's a box, a crate, or a whole collection that's been sitting somewhere damp. Working through it one disc at a time without a system wastes hours.
